Since turret and vehicle rotation are slow, you'll even have to drive in reverse a fair amount. What makes it extra challenging is not having a rear-view mirror. If a new map comes out, you'll have to spend a lot of time just driving around in reverse to make sure that you can get away without hitting anything. On top of that, maps have slight variations, so you'll have to memorize the new and different obstacles as you see them.
If you're trying to shoot on the move, you'll have to time your shots well too. Not only does the railgun shot take time to travel from your gun to your target, but any small bump or hill will throw your aim off. Missing a few shots against an enemy tank could be your doom! It's especially challenging in a shield tank because you only have ten seconds of hardeners, and most do not have a shield booster. If you fail, you'll need to wait thirty seconds for your hardeners to cooldown, and if you lost too much HP you'll need to let your shields recharge before entering into battle again.
So unless you're with the many red-line snipers in a shield rail tank, you'll most likely be driving backwards over terrain that has changed since the last time you played that map, and dodging enemy AV infantry in your two mil-isk tank while you time your shot to go off before you hit the bump behind you, moving the barrel of your gun so you can fire a second shot without having to spool up again, and deciding if you'll take that third shot and let your gun overheat, or to let it cooldown so you can take two more.
After all of that, you can go on forums and //_- emo-rage at all of the guys telling you that railgun tanks are too easy, OP, and need to be nerfed.
Or, you can be like me and avoid threads that have to do with tanking in the feedback and requests section of forums, and just hope that the devs use tanks in games too. Unless, of course, a fellow tanker tells you that there's a thread with great information and a really good idea xD.
edit: there is hope! The devs have started looking at tanks again and I like what they are doing :D
