OK!
So this is kind of hard to do. I have 6mil SP this week, and I still haven't finished my shield tank build. Hybrid turrets are the same skill, so I'd start there. Shield tanks need shield extenders, and those take significantly more SP than armor plates. It's not too bad if you started with arbiter, but if not GG!
You're looking at a long SP grind. I tried fitting a militia Soma with militia armor gear, and it has not worked too well, especially against other tanks. At least I can pull out a Sagaris if my Soma dies -.-
edit: you might want to find a focus too. 100% of my SP and most of my tank builds are focused into shield tanks. In addition to that, 100% of those skills (in tanks) are focused towards skills that boost my anti-tank skills, so I can be the best Tank Destroyer I can be. You'll have to decide what you'll move to first. If you decide to put points into more than one area, you should pay attention to the strengths and weaknesses of those builds.
Armor Tank: Anti-Infantry Armor Tank: Anti-Infantry/Armor Hybrid Armor Tank: Anti-Armor
Shield Tank: Anti-Armor Shield Tank: Anti-Infantry
Armor tanking is more versatile. You can make a great anti-infantry tank. Infantry is an armor tank's specialty- Shield Tanks can never be as close to armor in this area. Armor tanks can make an anti-infantry/anti-tank hybrid too, and shield tanks cannot do this. Armor tanks make a decent anti-armor tank, but are outclassed by shield tanks in this area.
Shield tanks are role-specific. They make a mediocre anti-infantry tank (when compared to armor), but are a fantastic anti-armor tank. They are terrible at doing both at the same time, and making a hybrid anti-infantry/anti-armor tank should never be attempted with a shield tank. As stated before, shield tanks have a significant advantage over armor tanks when it comes to vehicle combat. This is not to say that they are invincible and cannot be touched by armor tanks, because they can be.
I hope that helps :3 |

As tested by Caeli, that is incorrect. Adding a DCU to an armor tank with armor hardeners actually lowers its total EHP. Do not use DCU and an armor hardener at the same time. |

You should ADS with almost every weapon almost all the time. Same is true for the railgun. I'm not sure if this is true, but it feels as though the aim-assist option while using a controller works extremely well on enemy infantry. It does not seem to work well for enemy vehicles. When using a mouse, the aim-assist seems to have little to no effect.
You will probably have to practice aiming with a railgun. As you know, a shot from a tank's railgun takes time to travel from the barrel of the gun to the target. Almost everyone and everything has different acceleration and top speeds. It takes some time to practice the timing. Eventually you'll become good at judging how fast targets are moving, where they are most likely to be, and how many meters you should lead your target by.
After you master that, you should practice hitting stationary targets while you are moving. And of course, after you master that, you'll need to practice hitting moving targets while you are moving!

I guess I should add that the type of tank, SP allocation, setup, and skill level of the enemy tank matters. There are tankers with well over six million SP put 100% into tanking skills. Of that six million SP invested into only tanking-related skills, they have invested 100% of that into creating the best tank destroyer possible. These guys make almost all of their fits as anti-tank fits, and spend their time outside of Dust514 playing World of Tanks. If you go against someone like that, you should know that there's a very high chance that your tank will be destroyed. I think that's a contributing factor to many of the xxxx tank is OP posts too, how can someone expect to win against someone who is specifically specialized into killing you?
Fortunately, there are only a few tankers who have done that. Eventually you'll see people invest more into tank-destroying skills and builds (beyond "just equip three damage mods") so it will become harder to win. But for now, almost everyone is on equal footing.
I've said it in a few other posts, but the fastest way to get better is to fight people who are better than you. If your tank gets blown up, don't just AFK in the back, ragequit, or pull out MLT swarms or a forge, bring out another tank, change your build, or plan on your tanking skills. I think it's funny how some tankers get blown up once and then switch to a forge for the rest of the game. They are not getting better at tanking, they are getting better at forge-gunning, and IMO should have invested their SP into forge guns.
As one who started tanking fairly recently, I understand that learning to tank is an expensive process. There's really no other way to put it or make it easier for you, it just is. You lose many tanks at first, but if you can learn from your mistakes and come up with your own tactics, you'll end up destroying many other tankers in no time. |

I really <3 tanking in a rail tank. It's so much fun! You have a large amount of ISK on the line, can be solod by one AV infantry, and have to deal with most of the enemy team trying to kill you.
Since turret and vehicle rotation are slow, you'll even have to drive in reverse a fair amount. What makes it extra challenging is not having a rear-view mirror. If a new map comes out, you'll have to spend a lot of time just driving around in reverse to make sure that you can get away without hitting anything. On top of that, maps have slight variations, so you'll have to memorize the new and different obstacles as you see them.
If you're trying to shoot on the move, you'll have to time your shots well too. Not only does the railgun shot take time to travel from your gun to your target, but any small bump or hill will throw your aim off. Missing a few shots against an enemy tank could be your doom! It's especially challenging in a shield tank because you only have ten seconds of hardeners, and most do not have a shield booster. If you fail, you'll need to wait thirty seconds for your hardeners to cooldown, and if you lost too much HP you'll need to let your shields recharge before entering into battle again.
So unless you're with the many red-line snipers in a shield rail tank, you'll most likely be driving backwards over terrain that has changed since the last time you played that map, and dodging enemy AV infantry in your two mil-isk tank while you time your shot to go off before you hit the bump behind you, moving the barrel of your gun so you can fire a second shot without having to spool up again, and deciding if you'll take that third shot and let your gun overheat, or to let it cooldown so you can take two more.
After all of that, you can go on forums and //_- emo-rage at all of the guys telling you that railgun tanks are too easy, OP, and need to be nerfed.
Or, you can be like me and avoid threads that have to do with tanking in the feedback and requests section of forums, and just hope that the devs use tanks in games too. Unless, of course, a fellow tanker tells you that there's a thread with great information and a really good idea xD.
edit: there is hope! The devs have started looking at tanks again and I like what they are doing :D |
