You remain silent as you continue to reread those same lines over and over again. How can this be. Is this the wars that gods fight? Killing those who have done nothing but live and survive. It seemed that those few thousand lives were only worth 30 million ISK. A quick way in your opinion for the Corporation to make easy money. Disgusting practice this already had become in your opinion. You are part of the corporate machine now and dissent and a different opinion would not be tolerated.
Even as you move onto the battle barge the why of it still burned into your mind and what was left of that broken soul. When you took those steps into immortality was anything left of it? Was it just a hallucination of that bright white light or did it mean so much more. Deep within the core of your being you know that answer will never be answered.
You see others remain on the station as assistants attached plugs to those ports in their bodies. That pink liquid would allow them to breath. Their minds would be sent across the galaxy to prepare for the rest of the army to arrive. These were the elite of the corporation the ones who did the most fighting as their minds were always being sent from one battlefield to the other. It was these officers that had the human looking bodies and enjoyed the prestige and power that would be associated with being immortal. Living in a perpetual state of war they were truly the gods of the battlefield. Both Frackeska and the Drillmaster were of this elite group that was sent ahead of the rest of the corporation.
Tria Rae, Lod Morre and Ayn Casile stood around you. They have become your squad. Your fortunes and fame would raise and fall upon how well you worked together.
GÇ£Do not think too deeply on what you are called upon to do. We do what must be done so the wheels of New Eden can continue to turn. Lives come cheap in the galaxy if you donGÇÖt have the power and wealth to defend them. Do your duty to the corporation. Take your cut and soldier on. It is not worth dwelling uponGÇ¥ Tria Rae spoke through the private squad communication.
How could you just ignore it? Just move on like what you are about to do never happened? Had they needed to do this before? Just how cold and jaded did the others become that this... murder.. no longer bothered them in the slightest. To pass the time of the voyage through the jump gates of New Eden last minute weapon checks and training took place. Coordinating squad tactics for the coming battle. The table in the center of the battle barge showed the immediate colony. The atmosphere processor was still there. The community had sprung up around it. Simple farming and mining had begun as the colony would grow as it generated wealth for the corporations that invested in getting it started.
The largest structure by far was the atmosphere processor which would include the worst of the fighting. From that the streets went out in straight lines. It was laid out in a wheel like formation. Orbital strikes have been ruled out since damaging the atmosphere processor could result in the planet being completely uninhabitable so it would have to be the old way, the brutal way. As you watch the layout of the city as your squad is shown its action. You were to come down in a drop ship deploying from high up to land upon one of the balconies of the atmospheric processor sweeping its halls. These GÇ£rebelsGÇ¥ know the same thing the processor is their greatest chance of survival so you were told you where to find their leaders and execute them as the rest of the corporation came in from the body.
They were bringing with them 2 mobile command centers though they would be deploying only one of them. In the highly unlikely event the rebels were able to destroy the first one there would be a second one waiting. The disposable clone reserve was fully stocked and ready dozens of reanimation tanks primed to receive the conscious thoughts of those who died. In other parts of the command ship tanks were growing clones that would be transferred to the ready tanks. These clones were made up of the reprocessed biomass of reclaimed bodies. A rather gruesome process that involved specialized drones.
Both light and heavy combat vehicles were being loaded onto quick launch platforms that the lift vehicles could attach to and deploy them rapidly. Also being loaded was an experimental technology. With their mastery of genetics and cybernetics they had fully fitted what little amounted to a head and torso that was hardwired directly into a large walker. The conscious thought could be transferred directly into the weapon and would respond far better than any capsuleer controlling their ship which is what this technology was based off of.
Perhaps if you proved yourself well that would be something you get to control in the future. |

The time passed quickly and soon the battle barge had attained orbit. So close to the world processor finishing its task the atmosphere was volatile as large storms swept across the continents of the planet. The surface temperature was cool and just comfortable enough for a constant human presence. Basic plant life was the only thing that could grow on this blossoming world. And yet several thousand people gave up their lives elsewhere to live on this planet. For anything of value that they uncovered would be theirs to sell.
Already in orbit was a space station that was used by the others to clear out landing zones for the arrival of the battle barge carrying both the MCCs. Scans of the surface showed damaged buildings and fires. And as earlier predictions had modeled the colonists for the most part had retreated to inside the processor though they had fortified the ends of the roads that divided the city into sections. Using the wealth they got from the world they had bought turrets and positioned them around the processor and on it. Knowing that for the most part they could not be targeted with heavy weapons for risk of damaging the sensitive machine. They had prepared as well as they could have, but they did not expect the investors to bring in a mercenary corporation.
Had you known these were the kind of battles you would be fighting would you have chosen to become an immortal? Killing colonists who only wanted to improve their lives? But this was New Eden it was never a gentle or forgiving place. Perhaps in time those who did care who learn of this event and strike at them which would trigger a larger conflict, but even if that did happen it would be a long time from now. The station had blocked all transmissions from the world and they had the jump gates camped at all times to ensure none tried to break the blockade that they had. These colonists were alone and about to face the full force of a mercenary army.
Another step that would rip another part of your humanity, of your soul to shreds. Contracted to do work that no mortal would want to do save for perhaps the most depraved of pirates. Trained to shut off emotional responses. A clinical, brutal and efficient method of warfare. All of these thoughts race through your head as you move towards the dropship already on the MCC. You would be in the first wave of soldiers to deploy. Infiltration of the atmospheric processor from the top to eliminate the command and control assets of these colonists. You could at least make their deaths clean and as painless as you could. In war you went against the faceless enemy, but this was not war. Their eyes as they look into your helmet will sear into yours would plague you for the rest of your immortality. And it would be with the same question you are asking yourself even now. Why?
The craft jars even inside the MCC at the reentry into the planets volatile atmosphere. Once into the thicker air your dropship deploys and veers towards the processor while the MCC comes to a rest several kilometers from the city. The air around your ship explodes as they pour fire up at your craft but your pilot is good, she is one of the best the corporation can offer you. At one thousand meters over the processor you jump just as the dropship takes a round to its underside and explodes into a fireball. Your squad was in that vehicle that was tumbling and burning from the sky before another round caught it and finished it off. That concussive wave knocks you around in the air but you will not be deterred. In the past you would mourn for dead friends but even now they are reanimating inside the MCC and they would return to fight again. But this meant that you would be going in alone. You preferred it this way.
At 10 meters you activate the dampner that arrests your fall and you land in a crouch that jars the metal frame of the balcony. You reach for the shotgun at your back... No they donGÇÖt deserve such a messy, ignoble death. Instead you draw your pistol, with this at least you could be merciful and end their lives quickly.
This was not your war. This was not even your cause, but these people did not deserve this. In the back of your mind what remained of your mortal life screamed out as each death would diminish all that made you human. You did not feel like a god any more. You felt that you were just a weapon. A trigger that someone else squeezed after aiming you in the right direction. How blind you had been, but now you see. |

You had landed near the top of the superstructure where the towers had pushed out breathable gases. You move quickly from your position to the next landing. You ignore the ladder and just jump to the next platform as you land you roll to help dissipate the force of the impact. Coming up beside the door you reach up and slowly turn the wheel that lifts the bolts and you push it open. The helmet immediate switches into low-light vision boosted by thermal and infrared imaging to give you a complete image. None of the GÇ£rebelsGÇ¥ are up this far yet but they would be soon. Thanks to the corporation that built the processor its layout and your location in the structure is easily determined.
It was time to go perform that grim work. Moving quickly through the darkened halls of the atmospheric processor you scanner detects movement coming from your left, the stairs going down to the lower level. Stopping as you press yourself against the wall the pistol was readied. The first one through the door collapsed with a shot to the chest with a ruptured heart as the round passed through severing the spine. Painless.
The others returned fire through the door doing a fine job of not making themselves a target. It was a shame that you had to do this. These men and women were fighting for what they believed in. You were fighting because you were told to fight. For all your immortality and entertaining ideas of being a god this wasnGÇÖt very noble. You fell back through the hall to a place that would force them to come to you. So focused on those in front of you a second team had taken up positions behind you. Very good indeed.
Spinning on your right foot you bring the pistol around and fire two shots into the closest militia rebel. Your helmet displays showing concentrated fire wearing down your shields under the barrage of fire. Falling back into room to give you time for those shields to recharge. In those few seconds you bought yourself the only way to remove their advantage was to engage them in close combat. Moving to the side of the door as you put a few more shots out to force them into cover and you moved with all your enhanced muscle and armor could carry you into the group that had approached you from behind.
From the back of your left wrist a blade emerge when you clenched your fist. As the first turned the corner to fire at your position you rush his position. Armored glove knocking the gun from his grasp breaking the bones in his hand and wrist. Gripping the side of his head you smash it into the metal wall, he collapses at your. His friend lunges at you and you drop your stance and knock her arm into the air. As you clench your fist to punch that blade emerges to puncture the aorta in the armpit. She would die from blood loss in less than a minute. Two down. Three left.
As you come up from the stance your right hand grabs the weapon the rifle the woman had carried. Bringing it up in a wide arc into the collarbone and neck of the next man of the team. You hear both the bones break. Before he tumbles to the ground you ensure he will die not just lay there paralyzed. The blade used to puncture the brain stem. Two more to go. They come rushing at you together that pistol drawn quickly and you drop one with a cluster of shots to their chest ruining their lungs and heart. The other tackles you about the waist in an effort to drag you down. But you way nearly half a metric ton with your reinforced body and armor. Bringing your knee up into his chest as sternum and ribs break from the force. Both fists brought together at his upper back, between his shoulders shattering his spine from the force of the blow. With a wretch of his neck as you toss the body away.
Your anger at being made to do this was growing. How could this have happened? How could have people become worth so little. In the Federation Military you fought to defend the people. Now you were just fighting for the money. A mercenary was right. You resolve to end this quickly. If the leadership dies before the rest of the corporation closes in then maybe you can get the rest to lay down their arms. These thoughts are interrupted as fire from down the hall returns once again. Turning you run down the hall. Jumping down the center of the stairwell. Let them chase you all they wanted. This needed to end now. |

You make a promise to yourself that you will sear the name of every colonist that dies into your memory so that you never forget. This has become your baptism into godhood. The blood of mortals has fueled your ascension into this new era of being. You move quickly following the map provided to you by your current employer. The colonists have hidden in the chambers near the plasma cores that powered the processor. Deep in the core of the facility where they considered to be the safest.
The command structure was the control room of the processor where they could access all of its systems. They had planned well but with an army closing in around them it would be all for nought. If only you can get to them first, convince them to stand down, and end this. Maybe just maybe you can get the corporation to back down. That ISK is not worth what is left of your soul. You were still Gallente in the core of your being. The value placed on life and freedom would not be diminished through death and destruction. You may be an immortal God of War, but you can still stand for something. You will not let that conditioning win! You hear it in the voices of your squad as well no matter what they tell themselves.
The squad had taken access points through the processor. Even though you had a map, this was their home. You ran into their position and that massed fire strips you have your shields and almost knocks you off your feet. Damn these halls were so tight and your scanner had trouble focusing in on signals. Ducking behind cover as they sent another volley down the hall. Thinking quick you shoot the pipes filling the hall with gases thankfully your suit detects the danger and seals itself. The lenses shift into thermal and infrared to give you clear targets. Coming out cover and take one shot into those who made themselves a target. You heard their screams of pain and suffering. Forcing yourself to listen. This was to be your punishment for this crime against Humanity.
The firefight was over before it really began. Your display showed slight damage to your chest and abdomen. But it did not burst the internal gel layers for greater damage to your internals. You move on through the twisting maze of tunnels when you come to an open space. Most unexpectedly it was filled with colonists. Many of them were women and young children with old men who could be used to fight. They looked up at you with a large amount of fear in your eyes. The corporation sent you a message.
GÇ£Kill them all. Colonial replacements in bound to system. They broke the contract their lives are forfeitGÇ¥ |

You open a channel to your squad and to Fraceska. You try to plead with them. Get them to understand that this was wrong. Immortal or mortal. The killing of innocent people was the work of pirates and the depraved. Is this how the Corporation wanted to be known for? Suppression of the innocent? Only the worst and vile of corporations would want them. Your gauntlets were already stained with the blood of the innocent this would stain the soul and follow you for the rest of your immortal existence.
It was Lod Morre that spoke first GÇ£To go against the contract would also tarnish the name of the Corporation. This is the business that we were called upon to do however distasteful it may be..GÇ¥
GÇ£New Eden as a way of ensuring people get what they deserveGÇ¥ This came from your other squad mate Ayn Casile GÇ£We are not in a very good position to break our contract. The gates are blockaded and we have just a single battle barge. And where would we go? Who would we work..GÇ¥
GÇ£But at what cost are we willing to pay for it? If this gets out what proof is there that they had any involvement in this? It looks like a mercenary company came out of nowhere and raided the place, no better than piratesGÇ¥ That was Tria Rae she always came to your defense it seemed.
From the other end of the room guards came in and guns were raised. You point your pistol at them. The hesitation on their faces mirrors your own. These people should not be caught in this. As you begin to back away and take up cover behind the door you had entered from. Such an honorable action is not one that they would expect from such inhuman mercenaries. As they got the people out they took up positions around the room. You had forfeited the advantage you could have and fought in a battle of your choosing. Honor had you do this. No matter what they made you the core of that being still railed against such unethical and immoral behavior. To become just a weapon as you see others in your corporation have become. Uncaring of the targets only that it was another battle to fight. That is not what you wanted to become.
You now had a choice to make one that would not only affect your life but that of your squad and the corporation that employed your services and made you an immortal. How often it seemed life could come to these moments that defined the kind of person that you would be. Your squad would back you no matter the action that you took. If you finished them off your corporation would be pleased and the ISK would be theirs. You take the higher path and you would lose all of that. Though you are not alone. Other immortals roam the heavens. Some most stand for honor, integrity and virtue. The one you were working for only cared about profit and greed. In his pursuit of that wealth he so desperately sought he had tossed his humanity aside since it would have only made it harder to earn a profit. Is this what Humanity had become? To think to become such a philosopher it only cost you your own Humanity, but now could appreciate all that has been denied to you.
They could bind you in chains and torture you for an eternity but you would not bow. Not this time not ever again. You hold your pistol out into the open doorway as you drop it. As you kick it away you tell them that there is something that needs to be discussed. Something that concerns their survival and you can help them.
It is better to die in nobility then wallow in inhumanity. |

The next few minutes will determine everything. But this was something that needed to be done and all for the right reasons. As you come out from around the corner you meet the gaze of the militia leader. Your reflexes were fast enough that you could get to them before they could open fire if things were to go poorly. Hands remained outstretched as you begin. You tell them the corporation plans to show them no quarter and they cannot escape. You and your corporation have been sent here to execute them all.
The seeds of your betrayal have been planted. Whatever happened now was because you chose it and that is all that matters. How could they have lost all their humanity? Had they been fighting for that long? It no longer matters. You would either convince them this is wrong or die with the colonists. No one in the corporation or your employer yet knew of your GÇ£defectionGÇ¥ and you used this data to show to them what was coming.
GÇ£If you make it look like the atmospheric processor has been damaged and with our forces scattered they will send down the other MCC for emergency recovery of all assets. It is during that window that you will be able to get the colonists onto the the ship for when it returns to the barge we will not be questioned at the end of the mission while departingGÇ¥ That was the voice of Ayn Casile, it was odd to hear her on your side for a change.
GÇ£The issue will be when the corporation comes in to survey the damage. Obviously the alarms were false and they can resume their operations with no loss to their profit. Or an easily fixed problem that wonGÇÖt result in damage. What of the bodies?GÇ¥ Lod Morre spoke up once again.
GÇ£That is easy. We used their biomass for clone production. We lost bodies and this will help improve our corporations assets. Also they do not have to worry about the disposal since our reclamation drones have already handled itGÇ¥ Tria Rae once more added her voice in support of your plan to follow a more noble pursuit. GÇ£How will you make the damage seem real and not staged? We do not want to be later found out that we intentionally sabotaged this entire mission and broke our contract. We would never get another contract again. Have them create a breach in their defenses with a timed assault from our ground units. From there we can send in another squad. It was the firefights in the lower levels that damaged critical pieces. With conflicts over the city the second MCC will be required. I will order it dropped near the processor with only its bridge crew onboard. In the resulting confusion of the withdrawal you will be able to get them out while the troops use the other baysGÇ¥ It was a voice that you did not expect to hear, that of Fraceska.
GÇ£You did not think we couldnGÇÖt monitor your private channels? We had to do this once before and it grated at me. I will not stand by again while more people are murdered. I knew I choose well when we came to you. I will leave the remaining details to youGÇ¥ With that her line clicked off.
Now to teach these colonists to fight your fellow brothers and sisters. To give them a fighting chance while planning their escape. Killing them would have been easier but it wasnGÇÖt the right thing to do. Sometimes doing the right thing was the hardest of them all. And now that couldnGÇÖt be even more true.
GÇ£We will do it. It is the only way we can ensure the breaching squad is not too.. enthusiastic and actually really damage something or kill to many. When the MCC arrives we can call in dropship support and get them onboard that way. This close to the processor fewer squads will be boarding since the fire will be continuous though we will show them how to put on an impressive show while not damaging the shields beyond its ability to quickly regenerateGÇ¥ Tria Rae came off as the leader of the squad despite her previous attempts at saying she was not.
GÇ£It rails against my nature to crash a dropship but I will be the pilot. I will bring us down hard, though in one piece. It will still be operable, I hopeGÇ¥ Ayn laughed softly over the mic GÇ£We will be able to take the first group with us back to the MCC. I will have it stripped so we can get as many people as possible per trip. Drone control of the othersGÇ¥
GÇ£Faceless, get the colonists to the upper levels. The dropships are going to be coming in quick. We wonGÇÖt have very long to remain on station. They will be all on drone control and camera feeds will be blanked off. We will maintain this cover for as long as we are able. When we pass through Gallente space we can dock at a station so they can find new lives elsewhere. Hopefully they have learned from past experiences than to trust the words of some corporationsGÇ¥ Tria would ensure that her squad had the greatest chance of success.
GÇ£I feel that I will be dreadfully inadequate in this missionGÇ¥ Lod chuckled deeply GÇ£I mean since we wonGÇÖt be actually killing them. Though I suppose all that time IGÇÖve spent practicing will make the show all the more impressiveGÇ¥
So it seems that your gambit had paid off that you could trust some of your corporation were not monsters. The support from a most unlikely source in Fraceska. How many others could be trusted? What of the Drillmaster? Could he see a point in saving these people? Could the CEO who seemed more weapon than man? But appearances were also deceiving and time would tell how they reacted to the news of what was done. That would be for later once the colonists were off the barge and safely in Gallente space which in your opinion was the best place for them to find a new beginning.
Human rights in New Eden? Honor, Integrity and Valor? The noble and right cause to believe in beyond the pursuit greed, wealth and power? How naive could you have been? With the wealth of contracts and the power of worlds you could at least ensure pockets of decent human nature survived. |
