Modern grenade launchers have a feature where unless the round spins a certain number of times, it will not activate the fuse and nothing goes boom. Apparently this idea of basic weapon safety is something we lost in New Eden? Come on devs, let's get some common sense up in here. If my mass driver's blast radius is 4.4 meters, then the round should not explode if it lands within 4.4 meters of me. And for those of you who hate all of us mass driving mercs, this wouldn't allow us to use it in CQC. If you get next to me with a shotgun and I pull the trigger, the round goes out, the mass driver kicks, the round fails to arm since it's within the safe zone, and then BOINK! I'm dead. But I didn't kill myself with it, and you took no damage as well. Everyone wins. |

I find that's the best way to describe it. I fear it almost as much as the approaching OB noise. |

With armored dropsuits and shields, I'm not so sure it would cause much injury, maybe some shield damage. I'm more concerned with not killing myself with my own weapon. I can't think of any other Dust weapons that will kill the user, I've heard laser rifles can explode from overheating, but I don't have any experience with them myself. You can rant about New Eden not having an easy mode, but we're basically our own private armies. I've got a company's worth of weapons and vehicles sitting around. No realistic military force is going to accept weapons like that. Yes, the game is rather advanced sci-fi, but it's the Principle of Analogy. We have real-world military forces with rifles, machine guns, and grenade launchers; so I look to those examples to get an idea of how the Dust versions should work. |

I'd like to point to the fact that we're immortal mercenaries, safety features aren't a priority over increased lethality. The devs themselves said as much in one of the "weapons of dust" videos, we carry weapons no sane mortal man would touch.
Immortal, yes; possessing infinite wealth, no. That is what makes us try not to die; as long as you're not in a starter fit, you lose money with every death. I'd rather have a weapon with a bare modicum of safety and save on clones than berserk out and have nothing. Especially if corps have to pay for clones when FW comes out. |

A compromise could be reached, the description on the laser rifle mentions the safety features being disabled, why not make a version that still has them? So you can have the laser rifle that vents super-heated coolant onto the user; or for a slight isk increase, get one that won't kill you. It's up to you. Want a mass driver with a safety feature? You're going to have to pay for it. Want a cheaper HMG? Sure, but it might just jam on you. Weapons like that could let you have as much safety as you're willing to pay for. |
