This i about the upcoming Caldari AR.
The old model they showed us (here) looked weirder, more unique, more interesting
The model that's coming (here) looks too close to a boring real life rifle. |

If we lived 100 yrs in the future when our guns looked radically different and scifi, and we were playing some scifi game like Dust set thousands of years in the future, you'd make the same argument and say your current guns are what define the bare minimum.
What does the way the gun looks have to do with efficiency? it doesn't actually effect the performance of the weapon since its just a game. Its just about preference.
And Caldari are not about minimum efficiency, they're about maximum efficiency at the cost of extra comforts. The first gun looks pretty damn clunky and uncomfortable, makes it a perfect fit for the Caldari. |

The old model looks like it has lots of old-fashioned attachments. Seems to have an auxiliary weapon underneath, a flashlight at the top on front, and some odd 'black thing' right under that I can't recognize (maybe a bolt or a sensor).
There's no discernibly comfortable place to hold, past the main grip.
I'd say the model is better suited for a heavier weapon than an AR. :)
But yeah, the newer model, looks boring, but is far more believably practical. lol
Uncomfortable completely fits Caldari, just read the assault dropsuit's description.
What is believable by our real standards isn't necessarily the same thousands of years ago. No reason a gun has to look like a real life rifle, especially when civilization had to restart from scratch after the collapse of the EVE gate, and guns had to be independently developed without our old gun designs as an influence.
The flash light looking thing is a camera, much light the sights on some of the current ARs. Here's more details on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpJQjwKs6Kg |

Why not both?
Amarr are going to have two mid-range rifle type weapons (Laser Rifle and Scrambler Rifle), there's already been a suggestion by some that the current AR is a "Light Assault Rifle" which implies there's a heavier Gallente model coming in the future, who's to say we can't get more than one Caldari weapon filling similar roles on the battlefield.
I'm pretty sure its an AR judging by the 60 round magazine; just like the current AR. I would love to have both modes used though. The devs calling our current AR an "LAR" is really interesting, I do hope it implies heavy ARs are coming. |
