so here a simple idea for some new berries to get ramped up on.
4 on 4 conflicts in a small map with a 50 clone limit, and you must be in a 4 man squad to enter.
single supply depot in the center of the map to fight over, no tanks allowed.
simple and efficient mode for new players to ramp up on.
another option I considered was simply create a newberry game mode, if you play in newberry mode you get scaled down rewards the more sp your character has, after 1 mil the rewards would begin to lower by 3% per 100k sp on the character.
I know this is eve and the general rule is learn after dieing 150 times to heavies spawn killing you, but I'm just suggesting that their are other ways to learn to play. |

Sorry what is a Newberry ? some one from Florida in the USA ?, and to make a game mode just for people from Newberry ?
That sounds unfair for everyone else... what if you don't live in the USA ? |

I rather like the OP's rookie mode idea.
I would remove the "must be in squad" since a lot of new players can't figure out the interface, but maybe the game mode will walk them through it if they aren't in a squad? |

yep that was more the idea, if the player wasn't in a squad it would give them a little message explaining how to get into one, then they could begin the game.
it could auto match them as well into a squad, but then they would never really know how to manually enter one. |

And what if a squad of elite goons shows up in this 'small-scale conflict'? It's bad enough when they dominate a 16v16 match, but they would completely annihilate any noobs trying to squad up. |

they can but that's why they would make no profit, no sp, and no isk.
if all they want to do is pub stomp, their is nothing to really stop them but it won't be profitable to them,
at -3% per 100k sp after 1 mil sp, they would return no sp and isk by 3.9 mil sp.
and those values could be lowered, to as early as 2 mil sp.
sure some guys will like to pub stomp, but the large majority of players like to do it simply because their is no other way to get sp and isk.
I believe at least for now that the deterrent I've suggested would be enough, but harsher penalties could be applied. if needed. regardless it would not be any worse then throwing them into skirmishes and ambushes as is, but would encourage them and teach them how to get into squads |

This is a very interesting idea. We're always thinking of ways to ease new players into the game as opposed to throwing them directly into matches against guys with full proto gear. There are other benefits of something like this as well, where people can test their fits in a more controlled environment and the like. So it's something we're considering, though there are various hurdles to overcome to get it in place. |

I like the idea. Especially because of the 1mil SP parameter you recommend, that basically forces the blueberry to grow up and move out of mom and dad's house so to speak.
a game mode, that helps new players, but that old players can't abuse.
i like it.

Maybe it could be done akin to tutorial agents missions in EVE Online? Some AI would be needed to control NPC mercs in training missions. Maybe experienced DUST players could be contracted to take the part of AI or to teach AI how to fight

Great Idea. I'd like to be able to take my newbies out for a run without having to worry about a full squad of duvolles mowing everyone down as I'm talking a protege through how to switch to a rep tool. |

also consider a FFA or Free-For-All type mode
How this could be consistent with the lore:
1) 6/8/12 mercs are sent to and area to find some "rare" salvage. 2) Each are given 10 clones (if you die 10 times you don't respawn). 3) Whoever has the highest WP at the end of a match is said to have beaten off the competition and thus we can assume had time to explore and grab the salvage (we wont actually spend our time looking for salvage like tomb raider, maybe a quick video or something saying what we won). 4) Each participant will be rewarded SP and each person gets paid out by the NPC for accepting the contract and only the winner gets the salvage.
SP could be gained by performance ISK is standard $150,000 for accepting NPC contract. Salvage is random. |

Awesome idea, isk could be a bit higher as the number of players invariably suggests that some guys are going to be in the negative isk as soon as they spawn the first time. |

I like the general idea, it's rather like a hands on tutorial mission.
I would however shift it slightly. I don't think Rookie Matches need to be accessible by everyone so I'd add a maximum total SP limit on who could enter them (this would also prevent players from leaving an alt sitting gathering passive SP without playing then investing it all at once and griefing new players in the Rookie area).
I might also go the other direction with squads and disable squads within those matches, which would prevent a board corp squad from dropping into these matches vastly unbalancing the experience.
I'd also provide for two phases of the mode, the first phase would be starter fits only and have the most restrictive SP cap, the second would have a higher cap and open things up more. This allows for a staged progression into full matches.
Regarding rewards, if the SP limits where tuned properly I think that the 'starter only' stage could have full rewards (they'll naturally be lower anyway due to the size of the battle) with a reward reduction modifier (as per the OP) applied to the second battle type.
One final element (this would need some major refinement to avoid complications like griefers), allow for on comms observers to accompany the rookies in so that they could have a mentor with them to help guide them through some of the aspects they're facing. I really think this would be a nice feature but unless someone comes up with a clever way to implement it then it might not be worthwhile on balance.
