Not sure if this has been mentioned before on these forums, I did a search and it came back with people complaining about Chat and communication in battles, but didn't mention this idea. So if it has been mentioned before I apologize.
The Communication Wheel would work just like the Equipment Wheel does when you hold down R2, except that you're holding down the Push To Talk Button. Squad members would automatically have PTT turned off for Squad Chat, as it is absolutely essential for squads to be able to communicate on the fly. But if a squad member saw something they felt that others on the team needed to know (like enemy tank deployments, sniper locations, etc.) they could press the PTT and immediately switch over to Team Chat and let people know, then press the PTT again and switch back to Squad Chat. Team's would be able to hear anything said over Team Chat (cause otherwise it isn't really Team Chat is it?). Those not in a Squad would have PTT enabled, and would still be able to communicate with the rest of the Team in the same way as people in Squads. Press the PTT, say what you need to say, press the PTT again.
If you held down the PTT button, it would bring up the Communication Wheel, and you would then be able to choose the channel you want.
The Channels could be:
Team Chat: Available to everyone, chat is only heard when you activate comms (pressing PTT), responses can only be heard if you deactivate comms (pressing PTT again)
Squad Chat: Only available to Squad Members, and chat is only heard by members of that squad. PTT is off by default.
Squad Leader Chat: Only available to Squad Leaders, and Field Commanders. Allows Commanders and SL's to coordinate attacks. SL Chat is only heard by SL's and Commanders, and is activated by pressing the PTT button.
The Channels you could switch to quickly would depend on you current status. Meaning that Squad Leaders would be able to switch frm SL Chat and Squad Chat quickly, but would have to manually switch to Team Chat. Squad members would only be able to switch between Squad Chat and Team Chat. And unaffiliated team members would only be allowed to use Team Chat. You could also enrich the emersion level by having a voice filter on all channels except Squad Chat, that would make it sound like people were speking through actual radios, and would announce that someone was about to speak by having the radio squak when they pressed the PTT. (I was watching an ARMA II video and noticed that when people in a squad talked, it sounded like they standing next to weach other, and when they were talking to other players using their radio, it actually sounded like they were using a radio. I thought that might be a cool addtion to Dust as well.)
Now, obviuosly this idea needs to be cleaned up and polished a bit, but I think it could solve a lot of the Comm problems that we have. Excluding, of course the people that just don't want to talk at all in game. Squads would be able to communicate with each other, with out having everyone in Team Chat which can lead to a lot a confusion. |
