Another area I've been trying to test is Scanning.
What actions increase/decrease your profile?
Does scanning happen is pulses like radar or is it just a continuous thing like halo radar.
Do you scan 360 degrees?
OTHER
How is damage calculated for av grenades?
What is the base hack time of an objective for the 4 classes of dropsuit?
Does melee stack with nova knives?
How much damage does a remote explosive / proximity mine do?
Why does my mind go blank every time I try to recall the unanswered gameplay mechanic questions when I actually sit down to write about them on the forums?

I'm 95% sure that you only 'scan' in the V that is in your TACNET and possibly in the smaller circle around you on the radar. (but not likely). Also, I haven't observed pulses in any maps other than from the active scanner. You know who YOU are actually scanning of they have health bars showing. Everything else you are not scanning but is scanned has red chevrons. |

Beren, idk about that. I knife on my scanner alt so I'm constantly trying to sneak up to cqc on people. This has me taking cover while I wait for red dots to look away. And I notice that once they come within my scanning range, depending on the suit and skills, they flickeringly show up on my radar, ragardless of if I'm looking in their direction or not. That range right now for me is about 45 meter. |

@ Nikia, yes, but how much?
It's tough to test I think. I've yet to just get into a corp battle only to test it out, but some of this could come from allies seeing them when you light them up, but then trying to relocate them after you look away. Also I can't figure out the consistancy of scanning through things. Sometimes it seems like I can use my scanners through walls, and other times I know there is a gun behind them but I cannot see them. |

I dig it dude. Maybe just shoot out a email to the asian department director? Don't put to much effort into this, we will figure it out eventually (and much will change before release), but the effort you do put into it will be appreciated and the resulting information shared.

@Starshine: Now don't you feel foolish? One of my corp mates, Tech Ohm Eaven, has been testing out profile skills for a while now. Send him a mail. His numbers may not be spot on, but he's tested it enough to have a pretty good idea of how it works. He's been testing the enemies ability to spot him in different suits when he's crouched, standing, walking slowly, walking quickly, running and jumping. He might be able to give you some insight in the matter for now while we wait for an official word on the subject. |

I know for sure that the scanning & detection mechanic don't work properly for now. & it differs from match to match. & hit detection... today i found that hit detection some how depends on altitude on which you are, or on map topography. In some places you can actualy shoot through walls or roofs. Also i think red zone drasticly reduse flight lenght of bullet, like 3-5 times or damage to zero. Thats why we can't kill sniper in deep red zone. You need to get to that sniper in 200-250 meters close, to kill him, even if he's body totaly exposed to you. I traveled to red zone walked in it & only after that i was able to kill that sniper.

It's a pretty widely-used unit, not just for sound.
Scouts can - inconsistently - pick up enemies through walls. Heavies are some of the easier enemies to see this with, and I've seen it in a match where I was the only person on my team, and in matches where the target was in a position where nobody else in the game could possibly have had line of sight on the enemy in question. There's a scan radius around your suit in which you can potentially locate an enemy regardless of facing or line of sight, based on the comparison between your scan precision and their scan profile.
Within a certain range, having a direct line of sight on an enemy (meaning they're visible on-screen) will also light them up for your scanner - also influenced by their scan profile and your precision. The longer the range, the better their chances of not showing up. A Scout with no scanning equipment will light up another Scout with no Profile Dampener just by lining up so they're on-screen, and will sometimes like the same target up if they move in close enough behind or to the side. If the target Scout has a profile dampener, they're only going to be lit up if the enemy has them dead-on in their crosshairs, or if they get a LOT closer to you. |

I'll take a wild guess at it.
You have an active scan going towards where you aim, in a cone dependant on your scan strenght. This is why snipers can see enemies through walls from 600 meters. Picking targets in the cone depends on your scan strenght and how directly you aim at them.
You also passively scan the mini radar 360. Picking enemies here depends on your scan strenght.
All scans are pitted against enemy profile.
Any scanned enemies show on teams hud. Shooting does not make your signature go up on several weapons at least; e.g. Snipers don't light up. The reason they seem to, is people looking at the damage indicator direction with active scan. |

Speculating wildly, and from experience of past games (yes, I know, I know), I can imagine that you have the lowest signature radius (meaning you have the lowest chance of being detected) when you're crouched, and next is standing. I can also speculate that most actions increase your profile: running, sprinting, shooting, jumping, etc.
Also, it would be based on suit. A scout has the lowest signature, followed by (I assume) assault/logi, then by heavy. I would also assume that the pilot suit would have the same as a scout, and the command suit would be between an assault and a logi.
Don't ask me about numbers, though.
AFAIK, you're constantly passively scanning for profiles, in a 360 radius. Your radar picks up scans blues see, too, I believe. And I think that you pick up profiles better if they're in front, rather than behind. I've picked up a red about 40m in front of me, but had one sneak up behind me, right up to about 10m before. |

CCP wolfman mentioned in his devblog thread that sprinting, crouching and the like do not increase your scan profile.
I think it may only spike when you fire
CCP Wolfman wrote:Sprinting/walking/crouching does not have an impact on whether or not you show up on the enemy minimap. Different dropsuits do have different signatures (with the scout having the lowest) that make you more or less likely to be picked up by an enemy scan. You can of course influence this with modules and the better the scanner the harder it will be to hide from it. . |

That dev blog or forum thread does not answer a lot of critical questions.
My primary question is around whether a lower profile signature affects how easily a player is "lit up" (having the red chevron and name appear above their head) when in an opponents line of sight. So far, with dropsuit command V and profile dampening IV AND running an enhanced profile dampener.... I don't notice much of a difference. I seem to be just as visible to anyone and everyone. I suspect, however, that with the reintroduction of active scanners these skills will become a lot more useful.
I think some clarity around the specifics of profile dampening/scanning and all associated skills would be very beneficial to a lot of people. Devs help us out? |
