Kind of like the HMG compared to the assault rifle: larger magazine, weaker aim, weaker rounds, but more per second and more per clip.
Also, the killing hit only instakills 1/3 of the time instead of every time, like with the mass driver.
Kind of like a meteor shower.
There is also the other route, like from the sniper to the forge gun: I gigantic shell for massive damage, but it needs to be reloaded every 4 shots. The arc is still there and, like always, shooting it too close will damage the user.

its called assault mass drivers... 8 round clips with 6m+ range can be fired pretty fast, most of us MD think its useless due to low damage compared to other ones |

I'd like to see a cluster bomb mass driver, where the grenade explodes mid air and releases a blanket of little frag grenades. |

Portable Artillery.
These are good ideas for heavy weapons. Perhaps, as a balancing effort, the weapon could be primarily anti vehicle, or some kind of aoe with light individual damage.

Bigger blast radius but same damage as normal mass driver in a heavy slot.
An av variant could be the breach with same blast but higher direct hit damage.
sniper vs forge comparison could fit if range was halved by making round move at half speed. This would also as a side effect make it arc over cover better, more like a long range grenade. |

Heavy Mass driver.
