I say the same thing about dropships. We are like 30 thousand years into the future, build ships that travel faster than light, ships that are kilometers long and you are telling me they are still using VTOL craft for planetary warfare? Something seems a bit off. |

Not quite. Weaponized rail guns are not in production. The US Navy hopes to have a viable platform by 2016 and even then it is going to be on a battleship or heavy cruiser due to the vast requirements of energy. There is little horizontal recoil in a rail gun. The danger is arcing between the rails and as the current is passed through them it wants to push the barrels apart so you need materials strong enough to resist those strong electromagnetic forces. The battleship model will be able to produce a round with a muzzle velocity of around 3,500m per second with 50 mJ of energy.
Being this is the far future those concerns have been addressed and the amount of energy transferred to the round and its efficiency will be through the roof. So what would its muzzle velocity and energy be? More than enough to puncture a tank when its traveling at speeds over Mach 10. |

Scheneighnay McBob wrote: It's unrealistic enough that small railguns have about the range of a laser rifle.
A rail gun should have that kind of range. That is the purpose of a rail gun. It uses velocity as its primary means of destruction. When it punctures something the pressure difference will be enough to rip everything out that small exit out in a very messy manner. Or if it hits a person pretty much dead on impact. The pressure wave it creates from passing through an object is enough to rip down buildings.
It is a shame that sci-fi has given the weapon either super human qualities or it just seems like a futuristic machine gun, but in reality the weapon system is so much more than that. |

It really is just an extension of humanity's first projectile weapon, throwing something at the bad things(big cats, crocodiles, etc) only now they are throwing heavy things so fast that they annihilate whatever they hit.
Have you seen the pictures/video from the press test of it? The chunk of aluminum they fired was moving so fast that Friction caught the air on fire behind it. I wouldn't want to be within a hundred feet of whatever that's aimed at, and would want at least a small mountain between me and it.
Yeah I've watched the video of the test firing weapon. It is awesome. Watching it makes the skin tingle with excitement. |

The legend345 wrote:its so dumb you can make a glass tank just put all your slots in damage and youll pop the srongest tank for like 400000k isk. Its so retarted.
Then don't put your tank out in the open? Coordinate with your squad to flank the enemy tank while you get its attention then it comes down to a matter of threat analysis. Do they focus on the approaching infantry which leaves them vulnerable to your tank or do they go for your tank and leave themselves exposed to the ground support? Do you keep your ground forces close to help or send them out to attack?
If your enemy can potentially have those modifications then put your assets on the line like that? Battlefield awareness and tactical sense will help overcome any gear on the map. |

You would think they would be using gravity fields instead of jet engines. They have rail guns so electromagnets are super efficient so having complete control would almost be a given. But yet for all that technology their dropship is basically a helicopter without rotor blades. |

Or give me an Osprey like craft that as more control in the air and able to make banking turns but is capable of landing in a hover to drop off troops. But it's a helicopter. |

gbghg wrote: But tech like hat would be expensive, and dropships and other aircraft are mass production models, it makes sense that the cheaper alternative would be chosen. also VTOL tech would be considerably more robust that anti-grav tech.
They can flash grow clones. Sheath them in armor and arm them with the finest weapons the nations can build every few seconds. Starships that can kill planets. But yet that would be to expensive? I just don't see how such unwieldy craft exist in a millennium that a galaxy is colonized. Just seems silly to me that something like that stands out so much against the generally high tech setting EvE is set in. |

The dark cloud wrote:Oi now listen up you armor tanking scrub: railguns are fine, you have 2 times more HP then my shield tank so stop complaining about it and get good. You choosed the wrong path and now you want to nerf the main reason to spec into shield tanks? Not my fault that armor tanks have crappy DPS. Get good scrub and you better hide your tank from me.
It just go real. |
