I've heard people talking about how unbalanced things are in this game which leads to discussions of what new players will do in a years time (among other things) and my solution to that problem is simply this:
- Matchmaking based on SP totals within a certain range: 500k-1mil (New players) 1mil-2mil (Getting the hang of it players) 2mil-4mil (Knowing the ropes players) Etc...
Numbers given are for illustration purposes only. |

Problem though, just because someone has SP, doesn't mean they're any good. I accept that people who have played enough to collect a lot of SP should be held responsible to that, but the current discrepancy between the cost of equipment and the rewards is responsible for unrecoverable games, not so much SP. A player with 4 mil in SP will still only spawn in free fittings when his team is redlined, or he knows he's spawning in front of 8 enemies. Moral of this game, is if you start losing, you will lose badly, the number of close games I've played could be counted on one hand. The beauty is that it can still be fun. |

I like this idea however with one addition.
Skills need to be ranked based on how it survivable it makes a player. The forum is rife with posts telling people to skill up "core skills" before doing any specializations. Having sensors at 5 vs having Weaponry at 5 goes a long way in determining your effectiveness in a pub match.

I would agree with you but it could be argued that if you skilled into something that isn't a survival skill then that doesn't necessarily mean you aren't good at surviving. Someone could be the fastest medic around and be able to outrun your bullets and heal people, it also doesn't mean those incredimedics should be babysitting the new guys in 500k SP total matches either. |

But at the moment close games don't happen because of the huge skill point gap, amongst other contributing factors of course. I've faced off with guys who are obviously specced better than me because despite throwing rounds into them before they even see me, I've been killed by them in a heartbeat once they turn around using what looks to be the same gear (AR).
Edit: Sorry for double post, I'm on my phone right now and quoting more than once in a single post is nigh impossible. |

I'd hope that the system takes more into account than just sp. I suck, even when I had 30 mill sp I still sucked and was still usually playing in nothing but 5k isk fits. When I finally reach 30 mill sp again, I'll still be doing the same thing. |

Well that could have been your problem. Use your skills to use better gear and do better in matches. Maybe the matchmaking system could take WP average per match or something similar? |
