At the start of a match, the risk of bringing in good equipment and fits is rather neutral. As the match goes on, and you see your team being slaughtered, the risk increases dramatically. The winning team on the other hand has the risk deflate significantly. So as the team loses, they use cheaper gear, and the winning team uses better gear. As a team is winning, it gets easier to win by cornering the loser, and as you're losing it gets harder to survive. This is a sliding scale of risk vs reward where it quickly becomes far too much risk for far too little reward.
My question is this, how do you break from this? My team is redlined, and I bring in a dropship or a tank, I'm sure as heck not bringing in my best because the risk is too high and the compensation guaranteed to be too low. Not to mention the plethora of free orbitals that wipe out your entire team every few minutes.
Is this a reflection of the lack of incentive to win? Is there some way to break your team out of the dumps? |

I don't think they are looking to avoid this sliding scale as you call it. Eve doesn't have any mechanics to avoid this and I don't think such a mechanic would fit into the universe very well.
However I could imagine something to ease players into the game more by having a mechanic to avoid this situation in highsec battles. Gear restrictions for example would at least avoid situations where several prototype tanks curbstomb a redlined team. |

First of all, winning or losing in a pub match does not change the SP, ISK or loot you earn. The only incentive to winning are you stats. I like to win, but there's absolutely no reason to bring out officer gear (or proto for the most part) in pub matches. Maybe you can do it if you really want to kill someone who is also in proto or whatever, but other than that you're just wasting your gear and ISK. Save it for corp battles, because those actually matter.
So what you want to do at this point is figure out the average number of times you die per match. Then just come up with the average amount of ISK you earn per match. Pick one set, and figure out how much $ you want to make per match if you die your average # of times. No need for spreadsheets or calculations for this, rough estimates are fine.
I like to run in militia on foot even if I have better gear. (On my alt... this guy can only use militia!) I use the free BPOs a lot. You can get plenty of kills running in the Assault - Frontline suit without making any changes to it. Just strafe and get head shots. You'll also get better if you practice wearing militia or standard gear against guys running advanced or better.
Don't be a try hard! If the only way you can kill people using standard and militia gear is if you're in proto, you need some serious help. Running proto vs proto.. fine, but I see guys using even officer gear in pub matches. It is so funny, especially because when you get into corp battles with the same people, they aren't using their officer gear because they used it in a pub match! |

See now I actually found that an interesting read. It kind of underlines the issue I'm starting to have with this game. It seems the only point of playing is to earn more ISK and SP, so that I can afford to run a fit/vehicle every-so-often to just troll around having fun. The only competition that exists then in a pub match is with other players on your own team, to earn the most ISK by being the best on your team. I actually had someone on my team take out my tank with theirs, assumably so that they could do better than me on the scoreboard, earning more ISK. Now maybe they're just a Troll, or plain stupid, which is also a possibility, but I have to admit that the system rewards friendly fire. By putting your own players out, you knock them lower on the pay register.
I hope this improves with full release, if Friendly Fire came in right now, the need to shoot enemies would cease to exist, and I'd spend half my time culling the traitors from my own team. |
