This thread is the result of asking [CCP]FoxFour what kind of feedback he would like to see on the forum. I'd really like to encourage other devs to tell us which game elements they haven't heard enough about, so we can provide useful input in areas which we may not otherwise think to comment on.
This thread is in response to:
CCP FoxFour wrote:I would love for there to be more forum threas on the social aspects of the game, the corporation interface, the leaderboards, the battle finder, the mail system, and basically every feature outside of the battles.
Battle Finder: The system where the type of battle is selected with L2/R2 works well. In fact, most of the interface here works fine for me and I have no criticisms of it. One thought I've had is that the "Mercenary" battle type makes use of the area to the right of the list of battles but the "Instant Battles" does not. It would be useful for new players if this space was used to describe the objectives of the game type they are selecting, rather than hoping that they get a loading screen with the information they need.
I don't know if it's beyond the scope of a thread about the interface but I don't like being forced to join matches which are in progress. I would prefer to queue for a new battle and be given the option to join an existing battle if a slot becomes available, with that option requiring me to gamble immediate insertion into a match against the possibility that my team has already lost.
I don't think that it should be possible to join a battle once my MCC has taken a certain amount of damage, or once my team's clone count is below a certain level. Once it's late enough to call, if people start jumping ship, it makes no difference to their team whether a new person comes in or not and in fact having no new people fill slots would be preferable to me as a player in that match, to speed up the inevitable defeat.
Character Sheet: The statistics on my character sheet should include all of the statistics tracked by the leaderboard. I am missing a count of personal wins/losses here and have to navigate to "Contacts" on the leaderboard if I want this information.
I can navigate to the Skills menu if I want to know my unallocated SP, but it would be nice to see it next to "Lifetime SP". I like the skills menu as a part of the game which is prohibitive to players who cannot work out how to build a character with it but if that's not working as intended, if probably needs to be friendlier.
I get the feeling that players might want to see a skill tree with a description of the skill and what items it governs given when the skill is highlighted. Something more familiar than a list of skill names which aren't immediately meaningful to someone who is starting out. I also think it would be a lot easier if skills were more visually tied to their dependencies/prerequisites.
Augmentations works fine, though it often is often flagged from the neocom although my boosters have not run out.
Feedback on the fitting/market systems are probably worth entire threads each and I'm not sure if they fit with the given game elements.
Social: Chat feels like it has too many components. I think it's mainly the slide-out tabs. I'd prefer to see these at the top and have the option to tab between my chats with L2/R2. I don't understand why it only takes up a small part of the screen either. I can't do anything else while chat is open so it might as well be expandable to cover as much of the screen as it can and put longer posts over fewer lines.
If I select a player in the chat screen the visual impression I am given and the precedent set by navigation of the chat screen itself suggests I should be able to dismiss the "show info, add contact, block, send mail" menu by using directional left.
I've experienced issues with bringing up the soft keyboard and typing to my corp before deployment, then having my chat redirecting to team. The chosen destination for my chat needs to be conserved until I've sent the message.
I'd like some kind of feedback in the chat/join window when I'm trying to join a chat but not sure of the name, such as whether I've seen a 0 or a O posted, whether the chat exists. A suggestion here would be to have "Create/Join" only display one or the other based on whether the chat exists or not.
I would love the option to create a private chat with someone from their contact menu which would appear as one of my chat tabs but be unjoinable without an invite. The mail system would be best utilised as an offline message system or a way to send messages that need to be stored. Instant messaging through chat would be great.
I don't have any friends, so I can't comment on the contacts list. |

Mail System: There are probably other threads about this but the mail system is probably the least friendly feature of the Neocom. I know I am ruining the enjoyment of all of the people who receive "fanmail" where the person who wants to rage at them sends a number of blank messages before figuring out how to post, but it's seriously inconvenient if you want to send a message. It's an easy fix, though. The thing needs "SEND" to be a button beneath the body of the message which is selected with the X button. Playstation users will intuitively use X to select a field to enter text into. Pressing X on To, Subject or the message body should bring up the keyboard.
Similar to many modern email clients, once a message is marked as a reply, as in "RE: Subject" it should stop adding "RE:". I don't need seven instances of this string to tell me how many messages have been sent on the subject.
Leaderboards: I feel like this would be friendlier as a single table of all relevant statistics, which could be fit in if the "Kills, Kill/Death Ratio, War Points, Wins/Losses Ratio" menu was removed and replaced with a drop-down or other form of single selection "Sort By" field. Reloading the entire list just to sort by a different variable feels clunky.
No comments on the current functionality of the corporation menu. I assume it's going to have features added as the corporation system is fleshed out.
That's all from me for now! Please, others, give your impression of the social aspects of the game and how the interface facilitates these. And other devs, let us know what you want to know! |

I'll cut a lot of feedback on the social side of Dust short by pointing the designers to niche developments such as facebook or similar platforms. Those people have spend a lot of brain power to figure out how to get people to use their service instead of any other services, so this might be where you could look for ideas. |

Everything, Mithridates. Everything here. Is entirely on target.
The one thing I'd like to see, is not only at least someone decent alliance support, but particularly, a way for alliances to appear on the scoreboard during a match, even if it means overwriting the corp name entirely for those corps who are in alliances. |

Just the way you wrote this...I was like "epic sad." Haha.
Phenomenal ideas all. Every last one. In fact, the mail with the soft keyboard got me twice yesterday and I actually use a damn keyboard. So counter-intuitive I can't actually believe they made it the way they did. The way you describe how it should be is how I think basically anyone would have done it...except CCP, I guess.
I'll sign on to the joining battles mid match being incredibly annoying. I've had games where I joined, sat on the "tracked vehicle controls" splash screen for at least 2 or 3 minutes and then end up back at the Merc Quarters. I joined the game literally as it ended. Never even saw the debriefing screen. Waste of time. Its one of those small, small things that annoys just enough to make a game not look polished at all...

FoxFour, you had previously asked for what we are doing or would like to be doing while in MQ or WB.
Considering the complexity of this game, the front end community interface is going to be very important.
Few things:
Mercenary Quarters
Use the screens in MQ to advert Corps much in the same way EVE CQ adverts bounties, etc. One of the biggest mistakes I've seen devs make recently is asking console players to go to a PC for the social interface of their console game (See BF3). A game like Borderlands 2 puts just about everything on the front end screen for the player.
The MQ should focus on the Mercs interface with the community. A Merc should easily be able to see Corp adverts, research Corps and communicate with recruiters from the MQ as well as manage their toon and have some kind of idea of where they are in the universe.
It would also be nice to be able to see recent battle results via one of the screens in the MQ. Even if something as simple as showing recent Fac War system/planet control changes (not just a color change on the star map but a blast announcement on a screen).
Corporation Fits - Instead of having to walk someone through a fit in squad or corp comms (requiring a UVT) it would be nice if a player can see saved corporation fits (again like EVE).
War Barge
The table should provide a view of the map you are about to battle on. I don't know about everyone else but we use the time in the War Barge to go over tactics etc. Having the map to reference sure would be nice. |

Good feedback OP, but I have a couple points I disagree on ...
AUGMENTATIONS ... they flag up before they have run out because you can 'stack' the next one once your current one reaches less than 24 hours - working as intended.
CHAT ... you don't need to do stuff while the chat is open, it slides in over the top of anything, you just do your thing and slide it in when it flashes for a new message ... full screen would be terrible because it's handy to be able to see the page behind while typing, that softkeyboard gets in the way too much aswell ... and I personally prefer it side aligned, it would look messy if you opened the Neocom then chat, you'd have tabs overlapping tabs.
The main thing I'd like to see back for chat is the persistance of the minimised bar during battles ... currently I often have no idea someone needed me until 20-30 minutes later after the battle finished.
The rest is all golden, but that's my .02 isk on your chat suggestions. |

Yeah, I was unaware of this at the time of the OP and was treating Augmentations like an equipment slot rather than as a meter I could add to.

Just a minor thing but something that always bothered me is that when my chat boxes are minimized it still highlights whatever box I was on last. This prevents me from seeing any new messages or notices on whatever box I was last on, so if I were to minimize the chat box to change some features stuff on my dropsuit and was on my notifications box last I will have no idea if someone in my corp sent me a squad invite because it is still highlighted. Maybe it does flash even when highlighted but if it does the highlight makes it much less notable. It's a minor issue but why highlight a box that is minimized? |

This. So much this. I get a little thrill out of seeing long lists without context and discovering the connections between them, but I'm weird. For newbies this is incredibly unfriendly, and they have no idea what items they're unlocking or boosting the effect of.
Just as an example, I learned about damage mods from the forums, which many players will never visit, and decided to go ahead and apply some sp towards using them. When I opened the marketplace however, I discovered that I'd had the ability to use the complex damage mods since my second day when I specced Weaponry V, and just hadn't known it at all. |

all this and more.
i've noticed a couple of things not in the OP and i'm going to assume it's because it has been requested a million times; the first being the ability to invite to squad from the chat window and second time stamps on all chat (optional)
i would also like to see the ability to set a status for the social tab like 'away' or an automatic assignment of 'in battle' near my name so that we can all know when another player is unlikely to respond. this would also all the chance to include a 'looking for squad' status.
if players could set 'looking for squad' coupled with the ability to invite to squad from the social tab then the squadding process will be vastly streamlined.
similar to a previous mention about channel notification if one does not exist, some feedback when you invite a player that is already in squad would be helpful too. |

It's so annoying and it didn't used to be like that, it was brought in as part of the last major UI polish and it's just unnecessary to highlight the channel you have selected.
Highlight the channel you have active voice in, highlight with the flashing icon channels that have unread messages, but there's no need to highlight the last channel you looked at, or the one that will show when you expand the panel. |

Possibly a "Recently Battled" Tab or section? It would be nice to have the top players of the most recent match listed somewhere. That way, if I'd like to say good game to a particularly good player (Which I often do), I won't have to commit a long, number heavy name (for example) to memory.

Here are my requests/feedback (some of which has probably been said before)
A Notification Screen in Merc Quarters:
If you are in a Corp and we have accepted a contract for a corp battle, it would be nice to have a screen to notify people of this as well as a countdown timer till when the battle is supposed to start. A countdown timer would mean that you dont have to adjust for timezones.
Timestamps for Chat + 'EVE time' clock:
When people are looking for squads or are letting people know that there is an opening, you dont know if it was one minute ago or thirty. The clock will also give people a chance to base their timing (corp battles etc) against a set standard time. Again, that way you dont have to worry about timezone differences.
Recruit to Squad from Chat:
This will alleviate the problem of having to save to contacts and then the daunting task of loading your contact list.
Private Messages/Channels
This would be treated just like a chat channel but can be started by clicking on someone's name (kind of like 'add to contacts'). |

Why do I have to select the area of this menu where the checkboxes are? I would prefer to scroll down the checkboxes to the "confirm" button than to engage/disengage this menu separately from the confirm button. |

Id like to see alot more features involving finding other players and reaching out. So far it seems like you can be very isolated in an FPS, you join the match, shoot people and leave and onto the next match so you can't really interact while in the game. Of course I know you can talk to people and do squad tactics and hit it off and mail and start a conversation.
But instead of that being the only way, how about
1. Search for squads by Tactics. Say you are looking for a sniper squad or armored squad, fast attack, hit and run, frotal assault, etc. etc. click that and search for active and available squads practicing that tactic. And also it binds multiple players looking for squads into squads to play together. And you can select preferences like, prefer people with voice modulators, prefer people with 2/1 K/D etc. etc.
2. Search for players around your skill level. Along with the above squad interface request, you can also prefer people who are around your skill level K/D and WP wise.
3. Local chats & finding chats. Instead of just planets, have a local communication relay that lets players with specific interest join certain chat channels, like the Caldari Alliance or even better Chat Channel finder. Have specific tactic chats or recruiitment chats with overflow rooms that allow people to join and say whats up and meet people. |

+ 1 to all of these. Currently Local is too transient, Corp is too small. More channels = more ways to connect with others and have fun. |

I realize it has been mentioned elsewhere but I want to heavily stress 2 points:
1) We need squad information on the in-match UI. Player names, health/armour/shields state, and mic transmission would be a godsend. There is room above the scanner in the bottom left and seems like a natural place for that type of information.
2) Please for the love of god improve the method of adding people to squads from the social menu. I shouldn't have to add randoms to my contact list and then go enter mail to invite them to a squad. Ideally I would highlight them in the chat channel and be presented with an option to "Invite to Squad". Problem solved.
Thanks CCP, you guys are doing a great job and please keep up the good work. We all have high hopes for this title and faith in your ability to deliver.

IN GAME. I was absolutely amazed that I could surf other websites than just eveonline.com in this thing. It is really an innovative and new feature which I've never seen in any other game. If this feature could be added in a mercenary quarter, I would be absolutely blown away. The PS3 has a browser, so I know it's possible, I just don't know if it would be plausible. |

However alot of stuff could be delievered through the server straight into the game rather then through an external browser.

When you select the market place from the Neocom it defaults you into the Store Front. Although I have looked at the pretty pictures in the Store Front, I have never once navigated to any equipment via that interface.
It is very tedious to always have to push Left on the D-pad to remove yourself from the Store Front and be able to scroll through the catagories of the marketplace.
Would it be possible for us to be on the top of the menu and be able to immediately press Down on the D-pad? Whenever I go into the market place, I usually have a good idea of where I'm going to browse and I like to get their quickly. |
