As someone coming from EVE I find the skill progression in DUST a little off. I know I'm going to be called an EVE fanboy, but whatever, here's how I feel about it.
Let's take assault rifle skills, for example. To use an assault rifle you need weaponry, then assault rifle operation, then assault rifle specialization.
My proposal instead: model it after the EVE turret skills. So for an AR you train weaponry, then hybrid small arms (which allows use of all "light" weapons that are hybrids. I believe those would be the AR, sniper rifle, and shotgun at present), then train AR spec to unlock T2 assault rifles.
Why do this? 1) It's a more clear progression from generalized to specialized. why do I train a skill that specializes solely in ARs just to get another skill specializing in ARs? This has always bugged me about EVE's missile skills, too. 2) It will lend itself better to dropsuit skill bonuses. I imagine we're going to eventually see dropsuits with bonuses like "+5% damage per level to hybrid weapons" 3) It detracts nothing from bringing FPS players into the game, but makes the game much easier to pick up for those of us coming in from EVE 4) Makes cross training a bit easier without sacrificing initial SP investment required for any one suit.
We could apply this same logic to vehicle turrets. At present there is a "hybrid operation" and "hybrid specialization" skill, instead of blaster and railgun specialization skills.
Now, on to T2 hulls. I'd discuss T2 suits but they don't exist yet. They should totally follow this progression as well, though. There are currently six vehicles that just scream Tech 2. Talkin' about the logi dropships, logi LAVs, and Marauders. They're clearly supposed to be a high-tech, highly specialized variant of their T1 counterparts, but they don't require a specialized skill. Why not introduce a "Logi dropship" skill for them which, along with faction dropship V, is required to use the T2 hull.
We can apply this same logic to what will hopefully be specialized suits eventually getting introduced. |
