Question: Is it OK as a blue-dot to enter a HAV uninvited, and operate a turret?
Am asking as I've "jumped through" HAVs a couple of times to get past them inside compounds (In-and-out quickly), and generally noticing that people use them alone.
So, if HAVs (in pub matches..) are operated by just the driver, is it considered OK to jump in and grab a turret?
- Is it OK socially to grab a free HAV turret ?
- Will/can it cause issues for the driver?
- Are things like heat-building local to the turret, or shared in some fashion?
There are also situations, such as being half-dead and needing a "respit" from the firefights - being inside an armored vehicle, even for a moment, could prove useful. |

As the blue dot in random HAV driver's tanks, I'm not too worried about the etiquette of the situation.
See those forge guns lying next to the corpses? You're welcome, militia tank driver. |

You can hop in mine if you want. Just bear in mind you're not likely to ever find better than militia turrets, because blue dots are almost never worth spending money on. |

as a tank driver i really like smurfs catching a ride so long as they pay the fare. by that i mean if i got a empty tank than your free to jump in, if theirs 1 guy already in then u gotta b willing to work to pay your way as i like a slot open 4 squad mates.
if im under attack by close by AV infantry, get out anc cover my escape and youll b eternally loved ;) oh and also learn how 2 switch seats, if u get outta tank tryin then i dont want you near my tank. |

I can honestly say as an aspiring tank driver that I like it when random team mates jump in and take over a turret. Just do me a favor and keep on the look out for forge gunners and swarm launchers. Like the guy above me said, if you want a ride, pay the toll and watch my back. |

Ah, thank you for asking this question. First things first, I hate blue dots in my tank. I hate them so much that I frequently make attempts to team kill them ASAP. I have been fairly successful at doing so too.
You have to understand that small turrets are essentially useless. The blaster turret is best, but it has terrible range, so even if you're in Militia gear and a are new character, you're better off on foot than you are in my nice small blaster turrets.
However, there have been a few times where I have been happy to see a blue dot gunner. This is when someone fires swarms or forge at me, and the blue dot gunner gets out of the tank to kill the AV. For swarms, the guy using the swarm launcher has at best a slightly upgraded sidearm, and most just use a basic/militia sidearm, so it's a free and easy kill. The range of the small turrets is small, so firing at swarms or a forge from them is ineffective. Forges are slightly harder to take out, but as long as you don't make yourself an easy target, you should be able to handle a forge gunner. If you die in the process and save a tank driver 500,000 to 2,400,000 isk, you will most likely get love mail and be loved and remembered for a long time to come.
Anyways, most blue dot gunners like to shoot at the ground, the tank, friendlies, and the enemy MCC. Sometimes they just spin around in circles doing this until the small blaster turret overheats. If it has small missile turrets, they'll just fire at nothing for the entire game. It used to annoy me, but now that so many have done it, I'm used to it. The downside is if you're in a tank vs tank battle, and that blue dot gunner starts giving your position away. If you're in a rail tank (as a gunner) feel free to fire at targets that you see that might be a threat that you cannot hit, but only if your tank is engaged in action. If he's sneaking up behind someone, don't fire until he does.
This is also dependent on the type of tank too. I drive as a shield railgunner, but some people drive tank-types, and engage targets in close quarters. Those kinds of tanks (usually with blaster turrets) most likely are fine with gunners if they have small blaster turrets.
If there are small missile turrets on a tank, don't use them. If there are small railguns on a tank, stay away because he's bad and will just get blown up (or he's using the 100% militia fit tank).
There is no shared heat build up between turrets. Each is operated independently, but keep in mind that overheating any turret is a bad thing to do. Stop firing a bit before you overheat because you'll be able to sustain a higher dps for longer.
I do make an exception to the kill all blue dots in my tank ASAP rule, and that is sometimes in ambush. I found that blue dots in my tank are dots that aren't getting gunned down by red dots, so I can usually take two bad players out of the red dots' sights. Good players understand that they will get far more kills running as infantry on the ground instead of in someone's tank. If I'm in ambush with a blaster, I am usually extremely generous to the blue dot gunners, and I sometimes even give them small turret damage mods so that they can do a little damage as they fail at playing the game.
Every now and then I get someone with MANY points in small turrets, and they can kill a guy or two. Those are usually other vehicle operators, so they know to get out and kill AV on foot. Also, getting out of a HAV to capture a nearby objective is a good idea too.
And, you can always just send a friendly tank driver a mail asking if you can be a gunner :P The best way to be a gunner is to see if you can get on coms with the tank, because then the tank driver can tell you what to do. You can also help him kill other blue dots that get into his tank, or help him with repairs.
edit: > The logi repair tool only repairs armor. It doesn't help shield tanks in any way, so you're wasting your time if you try it > If you're low on shields, hop in to a tank and then hop out when you're full, that's cool.
To be perfectly honest, I would be a happy tank driver if CCP allowed me to equip my tank without fitting small turrets. Not only would I save PG and CPU, but I wouldn't have to deal with stupid blue dot gunners ^.^ |

Makes sense :P I almost exclusively drive a shield tank with a railgun. |

As long as you don't think they're working with a squad, it's OK. Same goes for LAVs.
Some blueberry today (apparently) noticed that I always had a gunner with me, so he stayed in the passenger seat while my gunner was hacking. |

I like getting blue dots in tanks. Sometimes though, they lose situational awareness, and do not go for uplinks, they dont get out and shoot swarm launchers, or dont bail out when the tank is about to be destroyed. Dont forget situational awareness when in a tank. |

I welcome gunners in my tank as long as they get out to hack objectives and know how to keep the turret from overheating. |

I suggest a different distinction.
If I am not in Your Squad I am a Blue Berry. However, I am no New Berry when it comes to Gunning, in anything.
I can head shot with RG Turrets, Large and Small, if we aren't blasting through the landscape at KPH. I can fend off Infantry with a decent Small Blaster Turret. The Militia versions will get us both killed though. Most Small Missile Turrets are so broken I would rather let your HAV die than be in it. I'll go capture Objectives instead, thank you.
I suggest either a Chat for finding Gunners. If one exists let us know. Information needed would include mic or not, training or not and knowing whether any skill levels are being Skilled for Small Turrets.
Or, lacking that, asking for Gunners on Local with a mic and adding them to your Contacts list. Keep them there if they work out and remove if not. When you want to go a Tanking you at least have some Gunners you can try and connect with. That is better than trying to outrun The New Berry Horde. It might even get your Corp more members worth having.
Remember this, You HAV Driver are getting 90% of the Kills. Put a defend order on the HAV and share the wealth a little as it will make the next OB all that much quicker. |

Even if they have points in turrets, "gunners" are still better off on foot. Small blasters just don't have the range needed to make them useful, and they can only fire from the same location that the tank can fire. On foot you can be mobile and shoot from a position that is not directly on top of the tank, but in a small turret you can only hit targets that the tank can already hit. If CCP made small blasters closer to the large blaster, and gave it a similar range, you'd have a turret that is worth using. |

The Biggest problem with blue berries in a tank (weather I'm driving or not) is that once the get in there they don't want to leave, its like they get in and make a little nest... You pull up to an objective and they just sit there, I love hitching a ride in safety to a capture point but once we are there I jump out and do something... And yes people its better for you to die then to let a tank on your side get destroyed, your team stands a much better chance of winning with a good tank driver doing his thing... if you have to re spawn its most likely not going to set you back a small (or not so small) fortune. and if you have that expensive a load-out what are you doing in a tank? |

i hate ALL blue dot gunners
I run a railgun range fit, absolutly none of my small turrets (even adv level) have the range to hit anything in the game from where im shooting from.
Everytime a blue dot gets in my tank i cry a little as they relentlessly shoot the air in random directions and sadly even stop shooting once AV reds come into range. ive had not a single gunner get out and hack/killAV/hit anything in a turret, some just sit in my tank the whole game doing nothing.
If there are ways to TK them please tell me, because ive just been driving to tim buck nowhere and sitting there for half the gfame to get rid of them. |
