By FPS I do not mean Frames Per Second, I mean First Person Shooter. This game is great it has big maps, lots of re-playability and customization, and the idea and concept of the game is amazing, it's new it's different it's great. Unfortunately it lacks on both its MMO and FPS aspects. Yes this is a beta and the game is constantly changing that is why this post is labeled suggestion. But I don't care much for the MMO part since CCP should know MMOs they will know what to fix.
My only problems with this game as a FPS is my personal user interaction. The controls are mapped so differently from most FPS games that the only thing that is similar is the Joysticks and the Aim and Fire button. I would love the ability to MAP my own keys. The sensitivity, or look acceleration, is just so slow whether I am playing a close quarter combat FPS like COD or a massive FPS like battlefield my sensitivity is always maxed, I can track targets faster defend myself faster or run away faster. I cannot stand this turtle of a character. Yes movement is limited to the suit your wearing it makes sense if you have a thousand armoured plates covering your neck but as of right now it is just way to slow. Also the menus pop up way to slow mid battle, if you are your squad leader it takes about 30 seconds to give a command order, unless your playing Skirmish and you spawn at your MCC chances are your going to get your head blown off, I shouldn't even have to use the menu to give orders, for example in BF3 I can actually set a squad order without ever leaving the main screen by looking at what I want and pressing select!
Dust 514 should in no way be an exact copy of all the FPS out there, because that will just be boring. This game is unique and fun and it should continue following the idea that is building it. With that said my suggestions are only to improve the user interaction for the player, at least for veteran FPS players like myself. If i play this game for like a week, then jump to playing another FPS I get torn to hell, not because I forgot how to play but because of how slow this game is compared to other I am not a MLG FPS player, I can say I am decent enough to notice that this game is lacking the user interaction of most modern FPS games.
TL;DR
ADD KEY MAPPING FOR CONTROLLER MAKE LOOK SPEED, LOOK ACCELERATION FASTER GIVE ORDERS IN GAME INSTEAD OF THROUGH A MENU

Button rempapping for all control methods has already been confirmed, and what do you mean by giving orders in game and not through a menu? |

I've been thinking about this, as to why the control setup is so different from other games, and I thought of something that no one else has mentioned yet (that I know of): Legalities.
It is entirely possible that the makers COD and Battlefield (and other FPS games) have placed patents on a particular control setup, so that if anyone else uses it they have to pay. CCP may not want to pay the fees associated with the patents, so they are trying come up with their own control setup. Allowing players to remap the controls, and you inevitably will will get setups that are identicle to COD, HALO, etc. Other games that have these setups available may have paid the fees, and added it to the cost of the game (because a peice of every game that sold would go to the patent holder. With Dust being a Free to Play MMOFPS, this could cause problems in the long run as CCP would either have to pull more money from the EVE Subs, or charge more for AUR in order to compensate for the added cost of the game.
I'm not saying that any of this is actually true, it is pure conjecture on my part. But it would explain why things are setup the way they are. Why controls are "wierd". |

You can't patent a 'control setup'. |

You're reading it wrong.
That's a patent for a controller interface, not controller mapping. |

Isn't that the same thing? It seems that they reference not only the physical controller, but the interface (controller mapping) neccessary to interact with the game. |

Instead of having to press DOWN button then search around for an objective, or player to tag, you can do it by just looking at the objective and pressing a action key. |

That's referring to the physical human - controller interface, not the controller - console interface, which is what constitutes controller mapping.
Can you imagine how ridiculous it would have been if the early platform games were able to patent their control mappings? No other games would ever have been made again. |

Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. I withdraw my earlier statement. Although I would argue that games would still be made, seeing as how Apple seems to have a patent on everything and electronics are still being made. My original intent was to try and put forth an argument as to why CCP didn't already have custom controller mapping that didn't involve them being lazy, or incompetant. Which seems to be the growing feeling on the forums. |
