You get a lot less rounds downrange in the same amount of time, for accuracy you will still attain after a brief moment of spewing lead with the normal MG, without any significant improvement to range it would seem.
Any particular reason for burst HMG over normal? |

Initial accuracy being the main reason. If you are an accurate S.O.B. instead of a spray and prayer (which I am) you can lay down enemies real quick without having to reload as often (because reloads are a beyotch). |

Also, my guess is that the burst works better for the sheild tank as well. Armor tanked heavies can take a little more damage allowing you to stand there for longer spraying. |

My Assault HMG provides longer range with less damage (per specs). I have yet to discover the actual range but the Heavy Weapon Sharpshooter will give it the additional 25% range boost. The Prof version will bump that another 15% when they are both at lvl 5.
The Burst will gain those benefits but the accuracy at the beginning of the shot is best when sighted on the target. I prefer heads for all weapons but high torso then head also works well.
That said I have not been that successful with the Burst as yet. Practice, practice, practice. |

That said I have not been that successful with the Burst as yet. Practice, practice, practice. There's a sticky on this forum that has weapon ranges listed, you should check that for the assault HMG. I'm one of the few Burst HMG users, but I don't use it all the time. You have to be dead accurate with it, but the DPS you can put out with it is insane assuming you can actually hit your target. It works best at range, close up it's extremely tough to use.
Ammo is also an issue. Unlike the burst AR you'll find yourself running low on ammo very quickly with this thing as it has double the rate of fire as the standard HMG.
Also of note overheating is an issue, even with the advanced model. The basic burst HMG is worthless though, it overheats way too fast to be of any use. The advanced model can bea great weapon, especially if the other team is running a lot of heavies. It dominates 1 v 1 against another heavy when you're accurate.
