Wasn't 100% sure whether to post this thread in Feedback/Requests or General Discussion, but I think the latter is more for "I hate/heart Imperfects" threads these days...
The question I pose to CCP is: "Is Unreal Engine 4 being researched or utilized to upgrade/port Dust 514 to the PS4?" And if not, can we expect any "next-gen" engine to be utilized to bring Dust into the next-gen era of console/s?
Naturally I can't expect too much more than a hint or radio silence on the matter, but with the upcoming release of Destiny and the probability of Planetside 2 being released on console, we can only hope Dust 514 will shrug them off with the use of updated graphics and physics, as well as the inclusion of new features. |

Godin Thekiller wrote:Well, they did it with EVE, and if I'm not mistaken, they had another engine back in 09'. I'm sure as time goes on, updates for the engine will happen. This game is supposed to run for 10 years with a biyearly release of content that can truely be called an MMO grade expansion. So the real question is what engine, which will most likely be URE4 because 1: it looks boss and 2: for porting reasons, and when will be the next update in the engine, which I expect to happen within the next year or so. Maybe longer, like the next two years, only tine will tell. Still though, this is a very good thread. +1.
Yep, my point exactly. While UE3 is still seen as an acceptable standard on current gen, the PS4 will have a far higher standard of graphical fidelity and physics, making newcomers to Dust look at the graphics in disgust and move on to something prettier.
I figured if they could do it for Eve, they could do it for Dust, but could it be done in time to ride the wave of the release of new consoles.?
And speaking of new consoles: if Microsoft decided to wise up and give freedoms to CCP they would not formerly grant, could we see the possibility of release on both new consoles, yet combatting all on the same server and bringing both the console audiences together? Now THAT would be a first! Not that PS and Xbox players may get along, mind you.... |

SSBBW Amber wrote:Personally, I would like to see DUST move to a Carbon based engine. I think Carbon would be a much better engine for DUST and it means that there could be a lot more commonality between EvE and DUST, graphically. Would we see it for PS4? Not in the beginning, but it certainly could come in the future. I honestly believe that CCP might even be heading that way with it.
My rational is that the "Future Vision" video released in 2011 showed WiS (Walk in Stations for those not in the EvE know). Players from both sides of New Eden have expressed an interest in having stations as "social zones". I see no reason in the future why we can't see WiS as a joint feature shared between DUST and EvE, but in order for it to work, I would imagine that both games will have to share a common engine. I just don't think that the PS3 is capable of rendering the type of graphics that we see in EvE, however if reports about the PS4 are true, then it most certainly will be able to handle the Carbon engine.
There are only a hand full of engines that I think are great engines and Unreal is not in the list. Frostbite2, Crytek3, Carbon, and Destructoid. For me there are no better engines out there. The Auroa engine Bioware use to use was nice, but even they are moving to Frostbite2 for DA 3 and ME4. Of course this is because EA owns DICE and all of the EA brands seem to be moving to FB2.
You make some very good points about the quality of the engines you mentioned, but I think you're treading into some dangerous territory bringing up WiS. I'm not an Eve vet, just a casual, but have heard plenty about the SERIOUS issues Eve players had with the redundancy of WiS and its tendency to melt GPUs for a feature that does not actually do anything to help them in-game.
I'll be honest, I love the idea of Walking alongside Eve players in Dust (kinda like Playstation Home). That kind of interactivity would be a real novelty. But the problems WiS apparently brought with it for Eve players alone make it a luxury feature that is no where near as important as the many other features CCP need to bring to us.
Going back to the comments about the Carbon Engine, while it has to be one of the prettiest Engines I've seen, are the physics right for a shooter? I'm not sure. Collidable objects are the be all and end all of a shooter, and Carbon does not seem to bring the kind of fine tuned "Mass Physics" that Unreal does. It looks a hell of a lot better, but disappearing projectiles and players are far more frustrating than less than par detail on their suits. |

I agree that the quarters thing had some serious side effects with older computers and GPUs. However, that being said, players were use to being able to play EvE on 4 and 5 years old computers. In fact when Trinity was released, it was released in two versions, one that required greater graphics power and one that could be used without the nicer graphics, but even CCP abandoned that after what, a year? I play EvE in full graphics with HDR on a laptop bought 2 years before Incarna was released. I have zero issues with the Quarters. That's not to say that a full blown WiS feature wouldn't melt the plastic around my laptop, but that doesn't mean thats it not needed. One of the greatest things about CCP is that they evolve both the game and their internal hardware as new technology comes forward. WiS will be seen in the next 2-3 years, I have no doubt about that. I don't think it will be released as a full featured fleshed out design that delivers on the ideas that CCP had for it, but as a social zone, I fully expect to see it in the next few years.
True, True. As long as that's what we can expect: a fully functional social zone with access to Merc quarters and other features that ADD to the game, not just for looks.
That being said, We will need the specs of the new consoles to be up to par to handle it. I'm aware of the quadrillion cores the PS4 is supposed to have, but it means nothing without the GPU to back it up. Same goes for the Xbox (surely MS knows the opportunity they missed and the prospects of joining the console audiences) |

Iron Wolf Saber wrote:I do not doubt there is tinkering with UE4 right now in CCP offices as the development grind has been slowing down a good deal.
I think that is what is making me suspect the change of engine. We haven't heard of any new features tested at this stage. Back a few builds ago we knew of the Buckingham server tests and what may be coming. What's more, we saw a much prettier game in the test videos than what we play now.
But now it's just radio silence on what is coming, and especially being around the (hopefullly) upcoming announcement of PS4 on the 20th, perhaps Dust will be one of the release vehicles that will show the next consoles TRUE prowess and excite everyone who plays Dust when they show the UE4 version of Dust.
I don't refute what Cinnamon says. UE3 can do FAR better visuals than what we get in Dust. But why haven't we already been seeing these updated textures in this build? Not because of matchmaking tweaks, I can tell you... |

Sgt S-Laughter wrote:I think they should just scrap Unreal entirely. Every game I play on Unreal has buggy terrain. The engine is great for blocked off "access / no access" areas, but when it comes to slopes and **** it just blows.
Can't argue with that. All the Gears of War games were basically flat paths and linear levels.......and they were the shining vehicle for Unreal Engine 3. I wonder if 4 updated their terrain physics better?
Otherwise...................Frostbite? |
