- Situational Awareness - Learning about your opponent - Always move - Maximize your fittings - Learn from those better than you
I was in your position eight months ago. Dust is my first FPS. I was pubstomped into a fine paste during my first few weeks. I looked up all of the hits "How to be better at FPS games" Google offered me. Things just started to click after a while though.
I broke free of the tunnel vision that crippled me in my earlier days. Getting "that one kill" made me completely unaware of my surroundings. After dying thousands of times, learned to look for the slight flashes of red on my screen or mini map. I recognized that some players assume that firefights are like pokemon battles - You're safe as long as no one looks at you. I used this to my advantage to catch someone off guard as I made my escape.
I learned to listen to the sounds of the battlefield. You start to hear how long three-seconds is once you fight enough forge guns. You learn that Burst ARs can only shoot about 10 times before they have to reload. You start to recognize who jumps because they saw you jump, and who jumps because they know what they're doing.
Movement is huge in Dust. Especially with snipers about. It took me countless shots to the head to learn that I needed to run in zigzags when I heard bullets whizzing around me, and run in circles when I hack anything.
After playing for a while, I learned the importance of core skills. I currently have 206 CPU and 39 PG on my Type II. i nearly fit three complex mods in addition to a gauged nano hive and standard weapons. That comes only with really looking into what each skill offered me.
Most important of all, however, is to recognize that there will always be people better than you by leaps and bounds. I used to think that I was going to be the best Duster out there. I worked for every point on my KDR and W/L ratio. I've made a lot of success, and I'm still behind some corp mates by three whole people. If you want to see true improvement you have to utilize those people, regardless of who they are, because they're invaluable resources. Using myself as an example, I stand to gain a lot about FPS from Kreyshawn, James, Nighteagle, and Laz from PFBHz. But i also stand a lot to gain from people like Protoman, Axl, Calamity Jane, and The Polish Hammer. Don't post ridiculous threads
There are all people who know how to do what they do best far better than I do. The fastest and most sure-fire way for me to get better is to learn from them.
