In a podside interview not so long ago CCP talked a bit about bombardments from guns larger than what we can use now. They had some ideas like area of effect things that would force the bombarding ship to stay at the beacon for a long while etc, but that got me thinking...what about the largest of guns? If you use them as a simple "kill the enemy" weapon the battle would become rather one-sided. Now they did mention the idea of making larger guns require someone to run up to the location and actually set up a beacon, which comes in to this.
This is an idea for when mercenaries are owning entire planets, not really a FW thing. In eve after you've taken sovereignty in a system the longer you've held it the more upgrades you can add to the system. ie: at level 3, you can install a jump bridge which makes travel within your territory much easier. Apply that same idea to Dust - allow the corporation controlling a district for a long time to start adding extra control points to the map that attackers will need to hack. This will mean that attacking a district that has been held for a long time will be a real meatgrinder. They could bring extra clones and expect to die a lot, but there's another option. This is where the biggest guns come in - the attackers set up a beacon for huge guns to lock onto, and the primary effect they have is to remove a control point or structure from the map.
This is assuming that conquest will be similar to skirmish as it is now and is only a rough concept at this point, which would take a lot of balancing to get right. You could do some interesting things with this to make large and extra large guns work with Dust without breaking the game. For example, make it so that battleship sized guns can level a control point or building in 4 volleys with a 30 to 45 second delay between them. If the defenders can get in between the volleys and blow up the beacon, the point is saved. Dreadnought sized guns could do it in 2 volleys, but they're really expensive and vulnerable without a support fleet. |
