I would like to start a discussion about effective ways to give directions during a match. If you have any suggestions post them up.
Compass Direction: There is an GÇ£NGÇ¥ on the perimeter of your radar that indicates which way is North. As fare as I can tell "up"on the map is not necessarily North. I need to take a closer look at the map to see if there is a North Arow of some sort on it. [Edit: I looked more closely at the map in a recent match and Up was North.]
If you give compass directions, make sure you are referencing the true compass direction, and not what is currently "up" or "down" on your radar screen.
I personally think it would be a lot easier if our radar screens were always oriented in a North is Up configuration.
Relative Direction: Use land marks. GÇ£3 reds approaching Alpha from DeltaGÇ¥
Question: Should GÇ£BehindGÇ¥ refer to GÇ£toward the perimeter of the map from...GÇ¥ and GÇ£In Frond ofGÇ¥ refer to GÇ£toward the centre of the map from...GÇ¥? As in GÇ£They are heading to the CRU behind Alpha.GÇ¥
If there is a significant elevation change, hill or building, you can use Above and Below. GÇ£They are heading to the CRU above Alpha.GÇ¥
Position References: Skirmish match Objectives are the best land marks. They can be uniquely identified and everyone can see them. Ambush maps currently consist of a portion of a Skirmish map, so you can still refer to where the Objective would be if it was a Skirmish.
If you refer to a non unique object you should also reference an Objective to help identify it. GÇ£There is a Heavy near the CRU close to Charily.GÇ¥
Distance: I could really use some help on this one. I have not really gotten a good feel for distance in the game yet. Despite living in a metric country I still find it easier to estimate feet than metres in real life. In the game I find it even harder to estimate distance in metres. (Although I am starting to get a feel for exactly what my max range is with my Laser Rifle (85m?). Other than the things that display range such as objectives, is there any other tricks to estimating distance in metres?
Is there a good way of describing relative distance?
In some cases you can say GÇ£across the road fromGÇ¥.
Please post any suggestions or ideas you have. It would facilitate battlefield communications greatly if we can come up with some standard language and terminology for giving directions. |

You are right J4yne C0bb, GÇ£ContactGÇ¥ is a good attention catching phrase. If I put together a full communications guide I will use that.
Good point Canari Elphus, I was forgetting about using the MCC as a landmark.

There is a distance scale on the minimap. Damned if I know what the circles mean, I should use the below tip for that.
You can also point your gun at a distant and get a distance reading on your screen (bottom left IIRC).
By mini map I assume you mean the radar? Good point. I will try to determine how far out each of the circles is.
I did not know about the distance measurement using your gun. I will have to look for that.
If both of those work as you suggest, they could be quite useful. I will see about working out efficient ways to use them. |

As a Cartographer in real life I would prefer to have the radar stay in a fixed GÇ£North is UpGÇ¥ orientation and have the little triangle on my dot indicate which direction I am facing. It would make it a lot easier to relate what I am seeing on my radar to what I remember from my map, and make it easier for people to know which cardinal direction they were facing in. ( I did make a thread about this on the feedback forum.)
I did some testing in a GÇ£No ShowGÇ¥ Corp battle to determine what the tics and circles on the radar corresponded to distance wise. However I found it varied by about 5 to 10m. I think this may be due to not having trained Profile Analysis. Sometimes things would appear to be on the inner circle at 15m and sometimes the same object would appear in the same place on the radar when it was 25m away.
The inner circle seems to be around 20m (give or take 5m) The middle circle seems to be around 60m (give or take 5m) The outer circle seems to be around 100m (give or take 5 m) The tics do not appear to represent nice even numbers. (33.3m and 46.6m?) Things disappear from the radar at 100m.
I donGÇÖt know yet how Long Range Scanning effects how distances display on the radar.
The distance only shows for your gun when you are aiming at something that shows on your radar, such as solders, vehicles, and objectives.
