So, this used to be my basic understanding of Factions. There are four factions named Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minatar. Amarr and Caldari formed alliances and Gallente and Minatar are aliies with each other as well. Thus I thought the war was Amarr, Caldari VS Gallente, Minatar and the my Factions (in my case is Gallente) pays me(the mercenaries) in ISK to either defend from or attack the enemies. However, when I played the game, I saw mercenaries from my Faction in enemy team... So now I am really lost. Can someone help me to understand how this Faction and Corporation works? |

I think its a combination.
A: It cant be cheap.
B: People with power rarely want to give that power to others. The reason Dust Mercs have it is because the people with power above us, need us, or at least our battle experience. Better to have reusable merc's with tried and true experience than a massive amount of inexperienced mercs running around. |

The original technology was critically linked to the "pods" that keep the pilots in suspended animation and allow a direct neural interface with the spaceship. This means that without a spaceship/pod transfer of the mind is impossible.
The newly discovered technology allow the transfer of ones conscience through an implant inserted in the brain thus removing the need for a pod. |

The short version is it uses a brain scanner outside your body to transfer the state of every neuron in your brain to a clone body. It requires absurdly ideal conditions and bulky equipment that you can't exactly walk around with.
After the capsule technology was invented, some guy said "hey, the pilots cybernetically connected to the ship are in one spot all the time that they can't move from ANYWAYS, why don't we put a brain scanner there too?"
And SHAZAM! The people who can control giant spaceships with absurd levels of efficiency and skill with their brains are now IMMORTAL.
Thing is, if they're taking a stroll outside of their pods they're just as squishy and murderable as any average joe, which is why you almost never hear of capsuleers leaving the safety and immortality of their pods in anything less than a maximum security area.
The fun cloning technology we are using allows us to die wherever we damn well feel like, public areas be damned! It's probably really expensive, though. Maybe more and more people will begin to have access to it. Maybe we'll move towards a future where everybody (still alive) in New Eden is immortal.
The question is, now that far superior cloning technology exists, when are the capsuleers going to start using our version so they don't have to be so paranoid about leaving safety? Is there prehaps some limitation to it, like not being able to transmit the absurd amount of information in the average capsuleer brain? (You think driving a tank is hard, how about knowing how to precisely control every electrical and mechanical system of every ship ever made as if it was a living part of your body WITH YOUR BRAIN?) |

Capsuleer tech requires a large, external scanning array that is too big for the head. As a result it only works when the person is in a sealed pod, not even planetary vehicles are stable enough:

The risk associated with the pod tech are also insane. Lots of potential empyreans get trapped in their own heads:

It is also worth noting that EVE clones are pretty expensive. The "free" clones can only hold about 900,000 SP worth of skills, so if you have 12,000,000 SP and die without a suitable "paid" clone, you will LOSE 11,100,000 SP worth of skill levels!
They haven't introduced this into DUST, but I did see a "Clones" tab on the Neocom at one point. I'm not sure if it's there right now (I'm not in front of the PS3), but it was marked with the "SOON(tm)" tag, so it leads me to believe that we may be paying for clones in the near future.
Also, we had a Dev (CCP Eterne) say that an EVE shuttlecraft (about 10,000 ISK, give or take a few grand) is "roughly the amount of money a upper-middle class family of four spends in one year":

That, of course, would be a space-side family, as ISK is not used on planets very often and you can buy a carpload of "Planetary Currency" for 1 ISK. Either way, for the sake of doing math, we will call 10,000 ISK = $40,000 US for the sake of argument.
If you look at EVE clones, the ones that store up to 6,100,000 SP (some Dust players may already have passed this) cost 250,000 ISK:

That's roughly $1,000,000 US! For ONE clone!
Anyway, all political reasons aside, that's why everyone in New Eden can't use cloning technology.
Of course, there is also the need to use dead bodies as scaffolding for the cloning process, so us immortal types need lots of dead poor people to fill our CRUs and Cloning Bays:

While this is a fantastic explaination I think u may be wrong about the capsuleers dieing permanently out of pod. Because I believe how it works is the knowledge is downloaded somewhere and stored but each clone can only hold so much knowledge before you need to update it. This means that an exact replica of your personality is on a computer somewhere waiting to be applied to the next clone. However if you learnedly to much before updating your clone that excess knowlgdge would be left out off the clone. I guess what I'm trying to say is that they wouldn't die even when not in pod just their knowledge they gain would not be uploaded into their clone while out of pod. |
