Hey folks, I have been away from the BETA for quite a few months, but loving what I am seeing since I left. I might just have to grab a few EVE friends and jump back in. Kudos to the guys here and the DEVS who are turning this into a kick-a__ game. On to my topic..
Being away for so long has given a different perspective in that I have been playing some other stuff (got the XCOM itch real bad), and watching some other stuff. Mostly ARMA-II, and DAYZ game play. Two things strike me about the comparison between this shooter and ARMA/DAYZ.
1 - you can turn your head (without turning your body)
2 - you can hear footsteps
It seems to me these two improvements to DUST514 would lend a LOT of fun gameplay to the game. It seems natural that you would be able to turn your head in a dropsuit without turning your whole body, and you certainly ought to be able to hear the footsteps of that guy coming up straight behind you.. or at least be able to turn your head and see him in your peripheral vision.
One of the early game-release videos for E3 shows a trooper diving for cover and turning his head. I don't recall ever being able to do that in DUST514.
I know I don't have a lot of recent gameplay to lend credence to my observations which is why I'll ask you guys. Has this been talked about? Is it doable? Is there something already in place that allows you to turn your head? Can you hear footsteps?
If these two items get added, I'm back in for sure. (I always seemed to get killed by a guy to my rear.. blindsided every time.. definitely need good teammates watching your 6 for this game.) Thanks for any thoughts, and if you think these topics warrant it, please lobby for them with the Developers.
Thoughts on this??

I don't mean this in a mean way, but besides for role playing what would be the point of turning your head separate from the body? It just doesn't really make sense to me in terms of an FPS. I suppose it technically could be done, but again, I don't see how it's different than just looking around normally.
Footsteps I agree, a lot of other FPS do this and so should Dust. If you listen carefully for them, it can actually alert you to enemy positions and if they're coming up behind you. |

turning your head is a terrible idea and it would be pointless. |

Ye 2 above me might want to have a look at a few of the games Wilbur referenced. The idea of turning your head becomes very useful when-
1-Sprinting. Being able to maintain your direction while sprinting but being able to turn your head to either side to check for flanking is an absolute gem of a mechanic. For this use alone it'd be priceless
2-While it won't be as useful in this game, being able to just move your head when prone and/ or in cover reduces the chance of being detected.
Much as I'd love to have this possibility, plenty of other areas need work first. Soon though |

Turning your head allows you to scan for threats on your flanks while you are running in a different direction. Turning your head allows you to check positions of your teammates without changing your line of fire. Turning your head is faster than turning your body. Turning your head allows you to check your blindspots. Turning your head effectively doubles or triples your field of view giving you an overlapping panorama of the battlefield. Turning your head whether on foot or in a vehicle allows you to maintain situational awareness.
Yes.. I supposed this is all true of turning your body as well (except while running/moving), but having to aim again after turning back in the direction of the line of fire should be something you can avoid buy simply turning your head while still aiming in the direction you were before. It's kinda hard to explain until you see the difference between body turning and head turning in ARMA. Watch some ARMA/Wasteland/DayZ gameplay to see the benefits.
We turn our heads in RL all the time.. why do we do that instead of turning our bodies? Just seems to make sense to me.

Thanks yes, I forgot to mention the benefit of turning your head without giving away your position. While prone or crouched, and still being able to scan for threats without moving your body. Yes unfortunately the game is too new for such a game-changing mechanic, and I don't expect it anytime soon, if they ever get around to it. I'll take a squad who can turn their heads up against a squad who can't any day of the week. --Des/Wil |

+1 besides its fun killing snipers in the back would be a shame if they could look to see use coming. |
