I understand that perhaps proximity chat isn't realistic (although, I don't think we're going for a realistic feel in DUST) given the amount of crazy explosions and action happening around a merc, and maybe it's likely there's noway you'll hear some enemy speaking to their allies even when you're standing next to them because of the bloody helmet they're wearing.
But if we could talk to our passengers, regardless of whether they're red, blue, green or rainbow berries, my god, things would become so much simpler. Imagine, if you will, the current situation.
"Hey, why's this guy stopping in midair?" "Dunno. Lets just lounge around." "If he doesn't move, we're going to blow up. That railgun is acquiring our position." "Oh, maybe it's a troll pilot trying to get us killed. Lets jump out just before the railgun hits so we countertroll." "Dude, we landed right on B! Quick, hack it." "If only we jumped when the pilot stopped earlier, he could've saved his dropship and we could've got B."
Now, with proximity/vehicle chat.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard. Meet Wallet Slayer, my dropship. Today we will cruise over to objective B for a rapid insertion and hack. Weather is looking mighty fine, however some swarm launchers may cause turbulence. If you feel sick... Well, there are no mouth holes in your dropsuits, so good luck."
Later, over B.
"Please press E or O, depending on your controls preference, and eject from the dropship. Once you are on the ground, hack objective B and proceed to the open area east of the NULL cannon. Gunners, feel free to remain where you are and rain hell on anything that attempts to touch our blueberries."

At the very least, provide vehicle-operators with 2 "notifications" they can send to all friendlies within a certain range:
"GET IN!"
and
"GET OUT!"

I suggested earlier some kind of loudspeaker on dropships. It would overpower other chat, explosions, etc. for everyone in the dropship. Of course, this would make it even more important for dropship pilots to have mics. if you don't have a mic, then there should be a drop indicator that the pilot can activate. |

If not some proximity chat then at least options for simple universal voice commands. It is more difficult on console with limited controls although potentially some sort of context sensitive option would be wonderful. My main issue with voice being the go to point is with about 3 exceptions, every single day I log into Dust my voice is broken. Join chat, have mic/headset etc etc little green light comes on etc, checked/changed settings/reset ps3 many times; can't hear anyone, can't speak to anyone. And to be honest there should always be an option to have voice off so you don't have to listen to the bodily functions of randoms. Though I agree particularly dropship pilots desperately need some basic communication tools. |
