I know this might be a bit out there, but an idea could be to impliment a jetpack into the game for mobility and combat purposes. To use this you could press (X) to jump then hold it to hover or fly. This would also help boost the overall opinion of the game. Of course only certain classes should be able to use this perk like scouts or assult. |

This is so much like SWB... minus vehicle wheels. but jetpacks would mean they would have to make a lot of ladders for everywhere jetpackers could go. |

The thing is there are ladders to nearly all the places jetpackers could go apart from the realy high buildings, the would only have to add a few more ladders. The jetpacks could also have a glide time so they can travel moderate distances but not hight. In most games the jetpacks only have a 5 to 10 seconds glide time to make quick a burst of movement instead of a prolonged flight |

Jetpacks would be a good way to dislodge that encamped sniper up in the hills, or to get to the top of the building without being shot going up the ladder. As long as the jump/hover level is within reason, I see no reason not to add them (heavies don't get any.) +1 from me. |

No hover.
The only way I would like this idea is if it is in short bursts, No hovering, long recharge time. No one will be running anywhere anymore you just going to see people flying everywhere. It would kill the long range game. Everyone would be stocked up with shotguns. |

I don't see the issue with hover, as long as it's as fast or comparable speed to regular sprinting. You can do short bursts upwards and forwards sure, but if you want to stay and the air and move about, I think that could be doable, provided the speed is reasonable. |

I meant to have the idea as a quick burst of speed as you could still reach high places but also not be flying the entire time to make it even for people who don't have a jetpack. |

What about something that's less of a jetpack, and more like 'Jump-Thrusters' integrated into the suit, allowing the user to bound up to high places, or move faster, and make themselves harder to hit while moving over open terrain, that would recharge like running stamina? Being able to do a 50-100 yard running jump, or one good 20 yard vertical jump up to a roof or other high ground every now and then on the field would move the game more into the 3rd dimension and increase the complexity of the gameplay, but not in a bad, or game-breaking way. Especially if troops were able to say...jump up to a low-flying dropship as it passes by, and going in the desired direction.
We're supposed to be sporting military-grade powered armor combat suits. CCP needs to make that more convincing on a number of levels. For instance, why do I take fall damage from walking off of an obstacle I was able to jump up to in the first place? For that matter, if I fall off of anything at a height that could damage me, I should be able to manually engage the inertial dampeners in my suit to brake my fall. Not only at or above a height that would kill me outright.
Powered armor suits are being worked on by the Pentagon and other entities for a number of reasons, but among the most important, is it's ability to allow troops to move themselves and all the ammo and gear they'll need over terrain where vehicles cannot or should not go, quickly and efficiently. If DARPA's current prototypes were given the fusion power core of a Dust 514 suit, it would allow a soldier to run for 4-6 hours without rest at 30-35 mph, carrying 300 lbs. of gear, with a 3 meter vertical jump.
It's a decent game, but in Dust I just don't get that 'Futuristic Demi-god of Power-Assisted Infantry Warfare' kinda feeling. I get that 'When I'm offline, my avatar must smoke two packs a day while watching Oprah, eating bon-bons, junk food, and downing it with a bottle of cheap liqueur, so he's also hung over' kinda feeling. |

My corpmates and I had a little discussion going in our forums about jetpacks. So I searched around the discussions to see what folks thought of the idea. I personally would like to see some type of jetpack variation introduced into the game. As a futuristic shooter it only makes sense that this type of technology would exist.
Of course despite that some players seem to feel such an item would hurt the gameplay too much and create some kind of unfair advantage. I played with jetpacks in both Killzone 3 and Starhawk. Both systems were unique from one another but each brought an interesting dynamic to the game. I felt the controls in Starhawk were easier but I also think the third-person perspective helped a bit too.
I think introducing jetpacks into Dust 514 should be done so long as it is done right. First it should be approached as a means of mobility and not as a weapons platform. That means there are no weapons built into mechanic. This approach lends itself to introducing an actual dropsuit that acts as the jetpack system as opposed to a vehicle or piece of equipment. By introducing it as a dropsuit type you can also impose the necessary limitations that prevent it from becoming OP.
A natural counter also needs to be introduced so that jetpacks can be taken down effectively. I suggest a small handheld variant of the the swarm launcher. Something that has faster tracking and speedier rockets that will be effective against nimble jetpacks. Of course the damage of the rockets would be minimal against armored vehicles or a dropship and could only lock onto personnel in flight. I would suggest making the mini-swarm a sidearm class weapon.
Obviously the skill requirements should fall somewhere between that of dropsuits and vehicles. Because the mechanic is mobility based and its inherent value should be to get from point A to point B in a manner not possible for foot mobiles, then the limitations of the suit should include the following:
- No equipment slots. This prevents the placement of drop-uplinks or nano-hives.
- Two side arm weapons slots only. Combined with lack of equipment, reduces weight enough to allow short flight times. This will also prevent jetpackers from carrying long range weapons and making maps more of a snipe-fest than they already are, while at the same time allows the carry of a mini-swarm to engage enemy jetpackers.
- Increased signature during flight combined with a relatively low signature when on foot. Promotes use of the device for infiltration. Also allows lower signature and longer flight times to be a product of better level suits.
- Activation of jetpack is a multi-step process to prevent its use as a cheap evasion tool in close-quarters combat.

+1 to everything you said but the last point, you should be able to use them in a relatively quick fashion, because I can see the main use for these as a rapid attack/withdraw unit, but we can't make it a "hit the button and your safe" maybe add a 2 second charge time to get you in the air. |

It should suffer the same limitations as a scout suit in that you get increased mobility but suffer on the armour front |

One of my mates also suggested another counter to the jetpack...some sort of net launcher with EMP. That would be cool but probably limited in range |

+1 I like the fact your suggestion is that the jet pack will be an actual dropsuit with no equipment and only sidearms. That would be sweet. |
