there is no verb "to Addict" in the English language, addictive is an adjective, someone who is addicted (adjective) is an addict (noun). |

This isn't true and the verb form of addict has been in use since at least the mid-1500s.

Addicting (v): considered non-standard outside of USA.
listed in the Oxford English Dictionary as "informal/vernacular" with references dating to 1939
since this is considered vernacular by the OED and non-standard outside of the USA (which regularly bastardises English) I don't consider it to be correct, CCP Eterne, if you can show me usage dating back as far as the mid-1500's I'd be very interested, and willing to change my mind.

True, every word *can be verbalised, but then it becomes a derived version and is vernacular, it doesn't make it correct grammar/ language use. |

"addicting" is the participle adjective of the verb to addict. It is considered standard in Canada which is outside of the USA "vernacular" refers to the language spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region as opposed to a learned or second language. There is no negative connotation to a word being considered vernacular by the OED.

Well using my favorite dictionary, Webster, he says that addict \+Ö--êdikt\ is a transitive verb. \+Ö--êdikt\ is different than \-êa-(-î)dikt\. The former is first known to have been used in 1534, while \-êa-(-î)dikt\ has only been in use since 1909. Of course there is \+Ö--êdik-sh+Ön, which is the noun form of \+Ö--êdikt\ and the noun usage has been around since 1599. Which leads us to \+Ö--êdik-tiv\, which is of course an adjective. In use since 1939 and the synonym for \+Ö--êdik-tiv\ is additcting. Oh and btw, OED just lists addicting as an informal way to say addictive.
Gawd, buy a dictionary you nerds.... |
