I did something similar but with AUR BPO's of the milita gear I use on my merc pack Raven suit - plates, shield extenders, rifles, nades, etc.
I do upgrade to better suits when I feel it'll give me an edge, but during a curbstomping I contribute mostly to the losses by throwing "free" suits at the enemy in hopes of taking as many std/adv suits down with me with each free fit. |

BPO fittings FTW
I have "expensive" Adv/Standard mixed loadouts, but I generally don't use them. Why? I don't see a large enough increase in productivity to balance out the ISK I have to spend everytime I die.
So, until my BPO fittings start to suffer, I'll continue to use them. |

Ok I run with a suit that costs 70k a pop pretty exclusivly and still have over 35 mil in isk. How much do you people have saved up running only BPO or supper cheap fits? |

Yea i used to think this way too, but honestly what do you need to horde all that money for. Unless you are running solo for the entirety of your merc career merc corps can generate more isk for your losses than you ever could using BPO's.
After 20-30 millions i stopped with my STD BPO suit, Now i use suits that costs b/w 50-75K ISK and i still use BPO equipment on my logi so that number will only increase.
You know what i may die 3-5 times in a match if im really playing badly guess what though, i'll still only lose 2 suits why? Because im even more cautious about respawning back in, im more patient and more likely to get revived and keep the suit.
Moreover for those of us that were here the days before reset prior to open beta know that ISK rewards went through the roof because more expesive gear was being used and ultimately lost. It's for this reason the flattening that CCP did on the suits/weapons/equip etc to bring std closer to adv and proto closer to adv has made militia so viable since many of the games equipment and weaponry have the EXACT same STATS as STD gear but simply run higher CPU/PG cost. Obviously the militia suits are a minor exception as there can be no denying the benefit of a std suit over militia. But really the flattening of stuff is what has led to this.
Of course players are going to try to get the best competitive edge at the cheapest cost thats just good financial management of your toon. Point is beyond a certain ISK amount there really is no need to run cheap gear, at least run expensive gear and then switch to cheap stuff if the cost gets too high in a match for you.
Point is, if more and more people used expensive gear and were more prone to DESTROYING STUFF(CRU's, Supply Depots, TANKS!!!!, LAVs etc etc etc) the ISK rewards are higher and higher and higeher. TO my previous point about expensive gear before the wipe, we had people earning near a million ISK per game because of the amount of ISK loss.
PROTIP: Hit the restock option on your suits to see what the total cost of each fitting you have is. Now use the rename function to add that into the name so you know exactly how much each suit is costing you each time you use it.
Edit-- I have 35 million and i have lost tanks costing b/w 380-455K isk multiple times in a single match, you just need to learn how to grind for isk and where to do it and learn that better gear is a game changer in terms of performance(unless you suck than really no amount of gear will help you.) |

Wow, I gotta ask how people run around with barely functional suits. Although it's true that even I aimed to make a budget suit, i can at least say it's fully functional. It's an Assault Type-I suit loaded to the core in Militia stuff, but at the very least it has 169 Shield, 232 Armor, and Auto Armor Repair capabilities. I can at least say I can survive 3 Sniper Shots. I survive many firefights with this suit even with basic gear. Though my main suit costs around 27k, this budget suit only costs me 10k.
The point of a budget suit is so that you don't lose much in a bad game, not CAUSE a bad game. |

OK, I am not a terribly good player and all (sure there are some of you who will agree with that...) but I'm using BPO fittings. Have a match up on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xUM4Qdv5DQ) where I went 33-2 with BPO gear, and I just went 20-3 in Ambush with BPO-only gear (in a "normal" Ambush match I usually have at least 12 kills and less than 5 deaths, BPO only equipment).
Its all up to the player and the opponents how well you do. I use BPOs because I do well enough with them in public matches and don't need to upgrade. When I start doing worse, I'll use my paid stuff in pubs. I do use it when I need to (AKA, Corp matches and pubs with strong enemies)
And again, I'm not the best player, and I'm sure some people would love to come here and remind me of that. But I can use BPO equipment better than nearly everyone in the matches I'm in (most often in the top three).
I'm not trying to brag; I just don't like people saying "don't use XYZ because you're dragging the team down". Sure, some people need to because they die a lot, but others (like me), just don't see much of a benefit to wasting ISK at this point. |

Due to a bad early investment in SP, I have to use lower quality DSF until I can get the SP to level up my skills.
The plus side is I get to practice asymmetric tactics and am forced to play smart or die. |

I have been using nothing but 50-60k suits for almost a month now (about the most expensive suit I can muster up), yet I have almost 20 million ISK saved up and it just keeps growing (has been slowing down lately though as players spec up more and more and get better at the game).
In the beginning it was just an experiment, as in Codex I was very thrifty and only brought out the 'good' suit every once in a blue moon. But at the end of Codex, I had some massive stockpile of ISk that I could not spend even if I wanted to. So I learned a lesson, stockpile only if it's necessary!
So in the current build, I thought to myself "Hey, I want to see if I can actually go bankrupt by using the best possible things I can". But as a consequence, I did better because I could survive longer and take out enemy players faster. So I died less, needed less suits replaced, and went positive ISK in nearly every single match. Now I have 20 million saved up.
Best way to gain ISK is to play smart, and cut your losses when necessary (ie not playing a match that you absolutely know your team will get steamrolled in). |
