It apparently works well against randumbs in pubs, but dampeners are almost completely useless to use in corp battles. Usually people don't run around like a chicken with his head cut off in corp battles. |

Yah, but he's even better with the AR :P
You don't need profile dampeners to hide in cover. In one game I just sat behind a wall and watched red dots. When they made a move, like sprinting, they'd pop up on radar. When they stopped moving they disappeared. There was even a heavy who went on the other side of the wall, stopped moving, and disappeared. He popped up again when he ran away (they stuck a nanohive on the other side of the wall).
Everyone should be using cover to get into better positions. Pistols need to be close, lasers need to be far, HMGs can be close/medium, etc etc. The AR is nice because it is effective at close, medium, and (semi) far ranges. Of course to fully utilize the power of the AR, you need to know what weapons your opponents are using. The AR allows you to take advantage of the other weapon's weaknesses.
I think that's a major reason why people do so "well" in pub matches with weapons like shotguns. Shotguns are good at pretty much only one thing. Everyone knows they have to be close to use it, and everyone knows they have to make good use of cover to get close.
Assault rifles can fill more than one role well, but almost no role the "best". At long range, in the middle of an open field, an AR user should always lose to a laser. At close range, let's say two guys one meter away, the AR user should away lose too. However, if the AR user pretends he has a shotgun vs. laser rifle, he will always win against the laser. The example with the shotgun works too- shotgun at 60m range in the middle of an open field? Good luck with that!
I think this a reason why so many people who don't use ARs think they are OP, but those who do use them do not.
Shotguns are bad at corp battles (cbs) because of their extremely limited range. It's much easier to get range than it is to get closer, and it's much easier to use teamwork to keep range than it is to use teamwork to get one guy close so he can use his weapon. Shotguns are also in range of another weapon that can one shot almost anyone that everyone has- grenades. If you think there's a shotgunner, and you absolutely have to go around a corner and can't go another way that's more open, you can just cook a grenade and throw it. The shotgunner will die, run away, or run out into the open for you so you can gun him down.
How well weapons work with other weapons is a huge factor too. In the rare chance that a shotgun user can get close to a squad moving together, he'll get dropped immediately after dropping one, or in the extreme rare case two guys. After he gets dropped, the guys he dropped will get nano-injectored and it's GG.
So you have to weigh what you lose by bringing a shotgunner instead of another class of weapon. What are other good classes of weapons that can destroy someone at close range? Heavies with a HMG or a logi with a Mass Driver. I don't know of any corp that would take a shotgun scout over a heavy or logi.
I'll add a bit more about profile dampening too. It's only good for an extremely short period of time, and does absolutely nothing the moment you start shooting. People are sacrificing good mod slots for something that doesn't help them while they are in battle.
The other problem with profile dampening is that people should be expecting it. I don't know anyone who simply trusts his radar alone. You should always expect someone hiding behind a corner you are running up to with a HMG or grenade, or that there's a sniper/laser covering a long approach, etc, etc. If you expect to find someone around a corner, then you should play exactly as you would if you saw a red dot on your radar. So basically, there's no difference between having profile dampening or not if everyone puts a red dot on your position, whether they actually see one or not. |

I hope that my long post explains my position ^_^.
In terms of your effectiveness in a pub match, aka how many kills you can get, I still believe profile dampening is not the optimal choice. It's a dampening is a tool of chance. You are taking a gamble that the guy who's around the corner is not paying attention. If he is, and he doesn't screw up, you're done for. Most players don't rely on one skill and have a host of skills that compliment each other. I see skills and mods other than profile dampening significantly more useful. As I said before, you don't need profile dampening to sit around a corner and ambush someone.
I actually get many kills this way, and I lol every time it happens. I'll have a guy following me, and I'll just run around a corner, then turn around with my AR aimed at head height. As he turns the corner, he takes a bunch of rounds in the face. If he tried to flank me, he wouldn't have died then. If I don't see him turn the corner as expected, I'll expect him to be flanking me too, or possibly cooking his own grenade, and take action to prevent myself from dieing and killing him. It happens to me sometimes too if I do something stupid (yes, I have turned the corner expecting a shotgunner, but chose not to throw a grenade. In my defense I was trying to jump into the line of fire of the guy behind me and steal his kill.)
Um, in terms of my play style, I usually just run and gun CoD style in pub matches if I'm not in a tank. (This is my tank guy.) I am also perfectly happy running in to a group of 5 guys, taking one or two down then dying. Instead of the usual run and gun style. I do it too because I have almost 0 points in anything related to infantry (no complex shields, no weaponry, etc etc) and I run all militia gear. If I don't run in front of the guys behind me most of the time, I'd never get any kills -.- lol. Yah, tactics don't help if everyone else is already dead x.x
So yah, there's the optimal choice of gear and play style, and then there's what you want to do. If you like to try to ambush people with a shotgun, or do what I do sometimes and charge into a group of people for one or two kills, go ahead, but it's not an optimal (or an effective) style of play.
edit: i see dampening as CoD style too ^.^ Just camp or lol... |

sounds good
I'd really like to see a skill that increases the scan accuracy/range of vehicles. |

so I spent some time just red line sniping on my alt, and I noticed a strange thing started to happen. I'm not sure if this is new, or if I hadn't noticed, but almost all the other snipers wearing adv or better scout suits don't get a red mark over their heads when I move my target over them. Some do switch my sights from white to red, and others display target information, but almost none of them have the red mark.
I guess this is something to take into consideration. All those scouts were so squishy, but two of them did not show up until I started hitting them with my rifle rounds.
I definitely feel better about ignoring anything related to profile dampening on my sniper, but I thought others might like this info. There is some benefit to increasing dampening skills ;).
edit again!: I thought about it more, and I like to rely on what I can control, ie how well I can shoot and how quickly. So when I fight, I try to restrict the number of ways I can be approached and proceed as if everyone knows where I already am. It's also kind of nice because I don't have to play hide and go seek to find kills xD.
The profile stuff is probably great for some people, but to me it's not something I feel like I can rely on. It's like a small additional bonus that might help sometime.
It's like if I die on foot (on my infantry guy xD) I usually say "damn I could have played that better" or "lol i ****** up". The random chance of dampeners successfully fooling an opponent or not makes me cringe. |
