Okay so it takes skills to call in vehicles (dropships). You need flat ground etc. However many people do not liek to use drop ships because it is hard to all them in...God forbid if it lands on its side. Or a piece of it is stuck in a building.
Yes I have paid my dues and this doesn't happen to me anymore. But for the sake of building the community and the fun factor it should be a LITTLE bit more forgiving.
One time I called in a drop ship and someone dropped a supply depot at the exact spot...Really? Another time (and this is once I learned to pilot) I was flying around and infront of me in POINT BLANK a delivery ship carrying a LAV (and friendly) SPawns and crashes into me. It keeps going but I hit the ground upside down. YAY.
Why Should it be more forgiving?
This game has a steep learning curve. Because of that we have many CoD people who already WILL quit the game. We have FPS players who never played an MMO who WILL leave. Also lets be frank this game is not a strong FPS. If you take out all the MMO elements it just like any other shooter. Literally take out the MMO elements and compare it to TF2. The only thing different are the graphics and vehicles. Really.
However you add these cool vehicles that are easy to use. Like HALO vehicles. Hey my LAV flipped. No problem lets hit X and flip it over. You get to keep more players.
Honestly I was thick headed and kept buying Dropships even after crashing them and wasted a lot of ISK. TOday I went through an entire skirmish using only ONE drop ship from beginning to end (and it STAYED ALIVE). However the thought did cross my mind that I should just stick to infantry stuff and not use ISK. However I am stubborn.
Now if other people are liek me but not as stubborn they will stick to infantry. ANd eventually get bored. Because of the boredom they will go back to vehicles i.e. dropships but will get frustrated again and go back to infantry where they are bored. And through BOREDOM not the lack of skills (they may be excellent infantry) just leave the game.
Now LAV's are also hard to drive. However they take dmg literally for JUMPING on hills. And if they flip too bad. Seriously. Give us a button to flip it back over. And be forgiving of the jump damage. It is a MILITARY Vehicle. ANd no one really uses them they are just CRASHED after we reach where we going (and I still say a scout suit works better than waiting 15 secs for a car). Seriously be forgiving with them and we may open up soem interesting game play. (Recently however I seen some excellent drivers but again they had to pay dues which many people arent willing too)
Now tanks I never tried. But they are common. If everyone goes tanks the game gets boring. It is like MW2 in Search and destroy. Go USP and have the same 3 perks. Or in Cod4 hardcore: go p90 and just preshoot corners.
Now Eve vets may talk about th elearning curve and the real money mechanics etc. But realize MMORPG and MMOFPS are 2 different games. This is an FPS first. You are selling to the FPS crowd. FPS crowd wants to go BOOM HEAD SHOT. If w edo not take into account the FPS players and only take into account the RPG players we WILL lose players.

I now hate you for publicizing this tactic, this has happened to me a few times and is with out a doubt one of the single most infuriating things to happen to me in a dropship.
Gunner just broke 20 kills RDV materializes in thin air 30 meters off my port side and I'm popped like the Hindenburg.

I'm not sure how many people playing today were around earlier in the beta, but crash damage use to be almost non-existant. As a result dropship pilots and LAV pilots would use the vehicles themelseves and simply smear infantry across the road. It was not fun, it was not interesting, it was boring and semi-exploitive.
Also, the whole "people will lose interest" only applies right now, when the game is basicly a casual shooter. It would be like looking at eve where all you could do is duel in frigates. It seems bare bones because it is, there is a lot to be added yet and what we're playing with is only framework that will be developed over many many months (I will remind you that the proper release date is mid summer this year.)
I do agree though, that vehicle combat needs to be a little bit more encouraged, right now none of the maps actualy seem to work for it and they are so small if both teams call down a tank they are automaticaly in a fight to the death. |

You know those super tall buildings with the ladder all the way up the side that snipers love to hang out on top of? The ones that usually show up back behind the red line? Try calling in the militia LAV on the roof of one of those. Now, hop in and drive. It will survive the fall. I kid you not. |

I hate it too, but maybe if we get enough people doing it, they'll consider finally giving us the codes to listen in on Air Traffic Control =_= |

Okay you all brought up some legit points and pretty much have the same frustrations.
But except for a tank most vehicles (I feel) are REALLY NOT cost effective. |

high end tanks can be taken out by the simplest of AV... and if you get blind sided by an installation... bye bye..... none of the vehicles are cost effective at this point. I do hate the oh **** there is an RDV spawning here scramble to get out of the way in a drop ship.... crash damage deff needs a nerf almost as OP as lamp posts. and yes I was here with free militia dropships and low crash damage. but now anyone who wants to use one has to pay isk for one and the militia ones die very very very fast so I say lets reduce it a lot and see how bad the squishing spam is.... |

I think that for all the power you get from any vehicle, driving them should be as hard as possible. Tanks, LAVs, Dropships - they are all force multipliers and can make a match against 8 people feel like a match against 20.
Sorry, I'm a 'boots on the ground' type of guy and do my best to never get into any vehicle in any game. |

Have you had your RDV spontaneously explode in the red zone just at the edge of running distance. AH, but your dropship is parked perfectly with no damage juuuust at the edge of running zone? Or your tank? or your jeep .... FUUUUU Three times I've had spontaneous sploding RDVs for no reason at all, I call in another and it does it just fine. I swear they hate me.
Or the RDV that circles overhead and teases you with your vehicle for almost a full minute?
The worst is exploding against a just-Cloaked rdv that flies in front of you (on the way out after dropping its load) so you can't see it to even dodge it >.<

Maybe I am the only one maybe not, but in my first time driving a tank I 'hit' one of those 'rock/little hill' in a map and It almost took 1/4 of my shield and the tank is very slow! And the same happens if I hit a building or other stuff.

why are you compairing the LAV to a warthog.
the warthog had a much much better driving mechanic than the LAV. it felt way better not a peice of cardboard with an engine attached that handled worst than the driving sections in mass effect.
i don't even know how you manage to make that connection at all. |

The LAV handling is terrible, I get the feeling that they don't really care much about vehicles actually being fun, but are trying to make driving excessively difficult so they can say their game is "hardcore". |

The thing is they changed too much, I remember those days but the dropships were also free and easy to fly. CCP just changed too many variables and kinda nerfed the hell out of the dropships. Nobody even uses them anymore. Some of my fav moments in the game were getting in dogfights with other pilots while red dots tried to shoot me out of the sky, now I just spend all my sp on logi skills cuz the only time I bother with the dropships is to transport to high ground and ditch the viper the second it touches down.
I'm sure CCP can see that dropships aren't being used in their current state because of those issues and will change some variables to make them more appealing, they are in the business of selling virtual goods and even virtual goods that dont have any utility or appeal wont sell. |
