"Oh great, another one of these posts" you're saying to yourself. But wait, i'm not here to talk about how swarm launchers are OP (ok, maybe just a little bit) and how tanks need a buff, ect. Instead, i thought i'd share my thoughts about an often ignored part of the game, the LAV, and the function it currently fills, and the one i'd like to see it fill in the future.
So, first the role it fills now. Currently the LAV is a dispoable mode of transport on some of the larger (although still tiny in my mind) maps to get back to the center of the fight after taking a far away post. No one bothers to create their own fit or modify the default one because lets face it, its going to bite the dust eventualy and all you realy have to worry about is getting to your destination before the swarm missles get to you. The turret mounted on the back is mostly useless, as any extra firepower it would give you is lost because of the inacuracies of aiming from a moving vehicle, or the vulnerability of standing in the open operating a turret.
But in my mind the LAV holds so much more potential. Its cheap enough to be used commonly and could offer added mobility and firepower to the average squad of infantry. Imagine how much cooler LAV's would be if they rolled up and the blaster on the back started shreding men out in the open, or the missle turret starts slaming rounds into an enemy tank from the side. Or the rail gun, wait, who the hell fits a rail on a LAV? Anyway, the point is the LAV could fill the role people expect from a tank right now, mobile fire power and added mobility.
To acheive this two things need to happen. 1st, small turrets equipt to a LAV should receive a damage buff, so as to not add power to a tank but give the LAV more of a purpose. 2nd, and probobly most importantly, the durability of the LAV needs to be buffed dramaticaly. They should have durability equal to what a buffer militia tank has now, or roughly 4 swarm vollys worth of health. Its not so much that its invincable (and the driver, passanger, and gunner would still be vulnerable) but its enough that a single swarm volly or forge gun shot won't pop it, meaning it can actualy use its speed to get away from trouble.
I think once the LAV is properly balanced the whole issue of balancing tanks will become much easier. Tank turrets won't have to be buffed as there will be vehicles on the field that are actualy worth killing, so they can fill and anti-vehicle role, and their health can be measured and changed relative to the LAV, so that they maintain the durability they have now in comparison.
Anyway, thats my .02 isk, i would like to hear what you think on the subject of LAV balance and uses, and if you personaly use a LAV as something other than a disposable jeep let me know, i'd be very interested to see what creative things people have come up with. |

i wouldn't want the LAV's armour buffed that much but then again i wouldn't expect it to be as paper thin as it is now. I do agree with you on the turret though, although i would like to see the turret rotation get a small speed boost as well. |

I'm using blaster LAVs full time, and I would like to share some things- Blaster turrets don't need a damage buff, blueberries need an intelligence buff. I can get plenty of kills with a small blaster, but blueberries can't even hit.
Instead of a direct armor buff, I think LAVs need a good PG/CPU buff. What almost always happens is that armor LAVs have to choose between using armor plates, or using a repair unit (perhaps the repair unit's PG just needs to be toned way down)
Collision damage is probably the true #1 enemy of LAVs- 1 bad bump and it's gone
LAVs have a huge speed advantage, however, their acceleration still doesn't allow them to survive someone throwing 3 AV grenades in 2 seconds. One of 2 things need to be changed about AV grenades, as the problem is they're homing impact grenades. Either add a fuse, or take away the homing function. |

The free LAV is awful.
I think the problem is that most players don't put anything into the LAV upgrades. I have been doing this and can drive one that has as much armor as a militia tank.
As is the LAV can already do everything you want it to do. A well fitted LAV with upgraded misslie turrets can be a tank killer. a tanked out LAV can survive forge gun attacks and pick up players with low armor and get them to safety. But players have to invest a little into the fittings to see good results.
I don't think anything really needs to be changed. It almost seems like you are asking the default militia LAV to fill all of the roles that the LAV fills when you give it some love. This I do not wish to see.
Skill it up first. Then see about balance.
Do you really want the free junk trucks to be as powerful as a dropsuit fittig that takes a month to skill into? That in my view is not great balance.

if you train the proper skills and spend some isk, you can fit both a repper and a plate along with a prototype scattered blaster. |

Hmm, once i finish pumping points into my HAV i might give the LAV a try and see what i can get out of it, maybe its just that it doesn't have the same kind of presige that a tank has :P |

You should get good results. Since all of your tank skills (shield or armor bonuses, PG/CPU upgrades, turret upgrades, and so on) except the ones for the tank itself (HAV level whatever) can be used to make a killer LAV fitting. |

ugh, well you were right at least. No, i do not want a jeep that runs circles around tanks and shrugs off terrain damage and stuff like that. I just would like to have LAV's that don't fall apart if it starts to rain (although my opinion of them has been changed recently) Now there is a halo fanboy thread started up somewhere else, you can post your 1337 videos there. |

Its not even my video . I was giving a rough idea on what I thought u would like since the turret isn't useless. So don't start that bs. |

Actualy you gave a rough aproximation of what you thought i would like. Don't go putting words or ideas in my mouth. |

I meant to say I instead of you. But in the video the turret wasn't so useless. I couldn't really think of anyother game that really used a jeep besides as a solely disposable transport. |

Totally agreed!!!! at the moment the only equipment that can really damage a tank is one of those cannons you find on the field. I am not saying a LAV should be able to take on a tank but if 3 or 4 of them work together with their combined fire power should be able to take one down. |

1.) Turrets (esp blaster) are amazing; you just need to give them a fair amount of SP. trust me, when you start killing forge gunners faster than they can get there charge up you will think differently of them.
2.) you described two different LAV's. One that can provide an impact to the battle field with out wreaking your wallet and one that can go though hell and back with a hot turret and plenty of bloody dents in the bumper.
As an avid Gallente LAV user I can say that the MLT and ADV variants can flip the bill for both. The militia Gallente LAV can take one hit from anything on the battle field when properly fitted at a cost under 50,000ISk. Also, in the last build my Limbus had 4000 units of health with 9% and 45% damage resist to Shield (900) and Armor(3100) respectively. I can proudly say that I was never killed In that fit because it explode with me in it. It was fairly common for the car to out last the driver.
the same is true as the first point. If you want something to work on the battle field, you have got to put some SP into it.

I've seen them in action, they look cool (red and black). Never got a chance to hijack one though. |
