It did nothing. Not like "zomg bs i totally killed you call-of-duty" nothing. Like he was literally standing still, i walked up to him, centered my aim, and put it straight through his chest. No damage whatsoever.
And thinking back on it, it seems a lot of the time the game ignores really obvious splash damage from this gun when a person is practically standing inside of the impact point. Isn't it supposed to have like a 2.5 meter spread?
Is there something really wonky about this weapon I'm not understanding or is it more or less broken versus infantry? I mean it kills sometimes, but I find it difficult to master a weapon with such unexplainable inconsistency... |

I have had several weapons do things like this.
At one point I was running shotgun scout and 1vs1 another, we fired few shots each with no effect then stopped moving and emptied magazines point blank at each other. We died while reloading, by shotgun according to kill feed.
This was few builds ago. It is getting less common as ccp fixes things, but sometimes hit detection is still all wonky. I think they'll have it fixed before end of open beta, as long as we keep pointing out when it happens.
Did the shield flash but no damage to bar? Most of time I had this happen the shield indicated hit but didn't apply damage. |

How far away were you?
The scatter on the Forge Gun is actually wider than the targeting reticule, so even if you're lined up perfectly, your shot won't always land where you think it should. |

I get the false blue shield flash with my sniper rifle and assault rifle more than anything. With the Forge Gun it seems to just always cleanly miss, even when they are right inside of the explosion.

Somewhere between five to ten feet, I'd estimate. This kind of thing happens kind of regularly though. I'm finding myself shooting at the ground more than I am shooting at the person in hopes the splash at least does SOMETHING, but even then it's pretty inconsistent.
If the shot is actually going rogue despite it being lined up and my not moving, then I guess that would explain a lot when combined with the sketchy hit detection and netcode... that is frustrating design, though. It's going to be difficult to compensate for something that is beyond all forms of control when I have such a long time between shots. |

If you're that close, it SHOULDN'T be deviating enough to miss the target (unless they're a Scout and you're REALLY unlucky).
As mentioned, there are hit detection issues, and sometimes weird lag problems.
I've had a few times today where I could swear I've been killed through a wall by someone's HMG fire when they opened up way too late to do any real damage, and according to the hatemail I got after one match, I was "abusing the hit detection" in the game and they never killed me. |

Was this during a time of server/lag/connection wonkiness?
I'm just wondering if the reason he was standing there was that something weird was going on. I know that one of the symptoms I encounter that tells me a disconnect might be coming is that I can walk up to zombie dropsuits and shoot them and nothing happens. |

Have had the same thing happen this build with rail gun turrets, small blaster turrets, and missile turrets. All while firing on a target theat seemed to be standing still. |

This is probably desync, rather than lag or broken hit detection code.
Your PS3 missed an update from the server at some point, so thinks your target is in one place when the server thinks he is somewhere else. If the target seems to be standing still then that just confirms you aren't receiving movement updates.
When you shoot, your PS3 sends the shot notification to the server: I shot from here in this direction with this gun at this time. It also, without waiting for the response from the server, checks whether it thinks you've hit, and if so, it displays the shield flash.
The server then checks whether that shot should hit anyone; because the target isn't actually where you thought he was (he's actually moving, you just don't know it) the server calls it a miss, and so no damage is applied.
It probably doesn't matter to you whether it is lag, hit detection or desync, I know. You just see something is not working, and it is annoying.
However, given that there are 3 systems (two PS3s and the server) in play here, with internet connections involved, there isn't really much of a solution I'm afraid.

This sounds about right but have not even seen shield flash during the missed shots. There is something a little funky with weapons that you have to charge. SOmething in charging the shot, aiming, and firing the shot seems to make them more prone to these weird missed shots.
Because you will make the same basic shot in the same basic way and most times it will hit, and then sometimes it won't. And there is nothing on your end or your screen that would let you know that anything was different other than you miss. |
