Haven't been able to get a real explanation on how the various chat types work. So far all I've been able to figure out is how to chat with members in my squad. I'm getting ready to start up a Corporation. How do I voice chat with people in the corporation chat room? I've seen these Universal Chat things that you have to purchase. Is that what those are for? Any explanation would be helpful |

Universal Voice Transmitters are for voice chat in any tab that isn't Squad or Team (Local can't have voice). So yeah you'd need it for Corp. |

UVTs are a way to pay for the voice server that eve online pilots already pay for. Having one lets you talk anywhere outside the squad in any player made channel including corp channels. Other mercs will need uvts to hear you. Pilots will not.
Local channel and other NPC gernated channels are not voice allowed.
While its a bit awkward and off its one of the things in negotiation atm but right now providing voice for the million mercenaries we have so far is rather expensive. Even when using a variant of the C3 by Vivox that is built in. |

Only asking because I'm not at home right now to check for myself. I thought I read that UVT's cost AUR. If that's correct, why? |

Quality of Service require for voice is NOT CHEAP. Bandwidth Isn't cheap either.
Neither is a comparable team speak servers that cost about $300 usd a month to operate and about $10,000 in hardware.
Luckily consumers rent parts of that server as low as 15$ or less depending how fragmented they make the server.
Either way someone has to pay for voice and ccp feels that if they track uvt sales they can fairly pay vivox for the services they provide instead of getting gouged.
As I said though negotiations are still being worked out for something better.
Corp UVTs are on thier way.
Also Aurum items will be resellable for isk eventually and will probably be the best dollar to isk conversion because everyone wants a 30 day uvt. |

That's really interesting thanks for explaining. It never really occurred to me before, not really something one things about when taking full advantage of being able to chat to their friends in a game at no charge. I don't really have a problem paying for it after being given that explanation.
I keep defending this game to people who are slamming it for not being what they hoped for. But what CCP is doing with the resources it has (I have to assume that they are significantly less then that of say, EA or Sony or whatever other AAA game developer you can think of) is remarkable in terms of scale and it's not being appreciated. |

And yet voice chat in every other game is FREE.
Go figure. |

And you paid for those games. And some of the money you spent goes towards making sure you can continue to chat for free. Knowing this, I'm not surprised that I have to pay to get on Xbox Live, and why I don't have to pay to play online on my PS3. |
