It's quite amusing watching a large majority of this playerbase whine and moan about blueberries or dingleberries or noob this and that. I mean, we've all been there, so it's funny right? "Crazy newb came at me with a swarm launcher on my sniper and I shot him in the face lolz."
I've been playing Dust for all of three days now - I don't profess to know literally anything. However, for all the cry-harding I've witnessed on the boards in the week I was stalking before I started playing and up to now, I can say with firm confidence that nearly zero percent of you are actually helping to alleviate this 'Blueberry Pie,' problem you're so intent on complaining about. I searched out the answer to nearly every question I had on my own, because the in-game community simply wasn't there to help. Asking a question on Local or Corp was generally meant with silence or the occasional troll rambling; I can count on a single hand the number of times somebody actually met me with genuine help or guidance. (Though, each time they -were- incredibly helpful and patient.)
Is that the sort of community you are hoping to foster? That of elitist scumbags so caught up in the fact that they've been playing since closed beta that instead of helping a new player learn how to be a better teammate, they whinge about how 'blueberries be blueberries,' and they 'be stealing mah wpz.' or talk smack about people should have purchased the Merc Pack so screw them if they have problems getting started. While I can certainly understand that some people will simply never understand that they might consider waiting to respawn in order to catch a revive, or that just perhaps running around the game equipped with a heavy dropsuit and a pistol might not be the best stratagem, they are in the minority. The vast majority are in fact new to semi-skilled FPS players who picked up a free beta because the game intrigued them and they simply don't grasp the details... yet. I mean, how many games like this have come out before? The closest I can think of off-hand is Planetside, and that's still home to only a unique niche of gamer.
The Point is, yes, be proud that you've been a part of this game since it was illegal to talk about outside of this community. Hold your heads high that you enabled something so progressive to take hold and flourish. However, now is the time to recognize that the doors have been unlocked, the beta is open, and you are about to be met with people by the thousands every bit as clueless as you were when you just started playing months ago. Instead of ostracizing and mocking them as foolish, thus creating a terrible community barrier in a game that quite frankly already possesses a rather steep learning curve to anyone not already familiar with Eve, perhaps you should consider patience and teaching. Talk to your team, answer questions in the chat, let them know exactly why what they are doing is frustrating or not conducive to skilled play. Maybe if you plant the seeds of information, you'll have fewer matches where the artificer runs around crying because they don't know how to select or use their nanite injector. This forum is a beautiful information source, you are all amazing, but you need to bring all of this to the game itself if you want to see a large player group of skilled individuals to play with and against.
So from a Blueberry to all the Pros, give us a chance. Help. You just might see a world of difference. |

While I'm sure that's true, most of the discussion is never about those douchebags not on your squad, it's about all the effin' noobs. |

While that's true and it does take a bit of extra effort to respond with the PS3 soft keyboard, the means is still there. Is that the reason why it's so quiet all of the time? |

Forgive me for shortening your tirade into a manageable quote but I believe this is the gist of what you're saying. Now, if you would widen your view for a moment. What you're saying is that there should be no hierarchy. Hierarchy is human nature. There will always, always be a top, possibly middle, and undoubtedly, bottom. There will always be those living off the misery of others. To that extent, you're asking us to change what fundamentally defines us as a race. Good luck.
That's quite the nihilistic view. I'm certainly not saying that there shouldn't be a hierarchy or that you shouldn't carry yourselves as, 'those who have come before.' I'm simply stating that being offensively brutal to the new players will fundamentally ruin your game. This isn't Eve; the FPS is not synonymous with roleplay. The very nature of lording over others in this particular genre is not welcome. The learning curve is steep enough without an additional community blockade against those who don't quite know what they're doing yet. Yes, you have to decide as a community what sort of players you are willing to welcome and which sort you are going to boot to the curb -- However, all the while keeping in mind that if you boot too many, your game will simply not grow. You'll end up virtually jerking off against the same top five corps/teams in every single match until Dust collapses on itself and the servers shut down. If people do not have -fun- they are not going to come back. Perhaps you are Ok with this, and if so... well, I don't know that I have anything else to offer on the topic. I'm making the case that this crying over new players ruining your precious game is a moot point, and that if you want new players to quit being all derpy you will need to guide them. Not everyone immediately searches for the forums of a game - Most certainly not the average FPSer. |

I'm clearing the air before much more misinterpretation enters this discussion - I'm not personally complaining. I sought help, found it, and have carried on with my day. I'm not butthurt or lolmad or confused about this type of game - If I was, I wouldn't be trying to offer this discourse on the topic, I'd be lolmadcrying all over chat and telling people never to play this game.
I'm also not trying to say that I'm some expert who knows more than all of you.
The only thing I was trying to bring to light is that there is a very apparent bias against new players to the game, one that most Betas seem to go through, and it is inherently toxic to the overall playerbase. Realizing this and taking steps against it before it degenerates into something like Dota/LoL or COD ragerfests will just prove to be the most beneficial to the game. If somebody is going all derp, tell them why they're a total derp and -help them out- if you're so upset.
Or, I guess, cry on forums all day about noobs and act like that's going to fix anything. |
