The weapon does quite well as CQC - because frankly, the self-damage effect is broken (exact same problem with the Swarm Launcher back when it dumbfired) The real trick isn't to aim at the target, but to aim to it, and keep shooting - the splash damage adds up quickly. And if you have a height advantage, then the MD becomes a great enemy suppression weapon.
This turned into a wall of text sorry but its 3 builds of MD experience(that includes when MD had four rounds to a clip)
self damage works fine, that said unless you can lead perfectly and get at least 1/2 shots on target aim for the feet if you can see their feet you are wrong, UNLESS the have something 1-2 meters behind them then shoot at them/ the object behind them. if they get close aim right behind them(this is why most people think the self damage is broken).
using a MD is all about positioning. never give them a clear shot if you have cover use it to obscure your self while using the splash to get them, you wouldn't believe the number of people i kill without taking damage because I lure them into chasing me around cover. If you don't have cover dodge a lot its hard enough to get a bead on a MD with out the ******* dancing between shots. jumping just before a shot is hella useful, it increases the angle you can miss the ground at their feet significantly in CQC, allows for the occasional head shot while guaranteeing a hit and makes you harder to hit(Ive teo hit assaults doing this).
People will often say that high grounds is best for a MD, and this is an acceptable rule of thumb but not complete, really any position that makes the ground around their feet take up more of your screen is the best. Are you on a long hill? most people would assume being above them is better, ITS NOT if you can do it easily get below them, on a steep enough hill you can aim for their knees or chest and still be garentied splash while increasing the likelihood of getting a body shot. on top of a building is great but if they hug the walls you have to expose your self to hit them and dance on the edge which is hard to do. Instead if there is no one else to shoot jump down and lead a shot at their chest if you miss you hit the wall and still get the splash.
Take your time with your shots the MD round upsets their aim like a MF. Missing a round will get you hit more then taking an extra second to get your aim right. Its really easy to just spam grenades in a heated fight but I have died far more to missed grenades then to taking to long too get a shot off.
I encourage you to use the MD long range as often as you have a good shot once you get use to the arc of a mass driver its one of the most deadly ranged weapons out there, even before you become an eagle eye with the MD you can use your first shot for ranging.
Shield DO NOT TAKE FULL DAMAGE from mass driver rounds(another reason people think self damage is broken) use this to your advantage. Also carry flux grenades not normal with your MD even the most badass tank melts in 3 rounds of splash, less if they are not heavies, if you strip their shields off. Against proto suits and large groups flux grenades or your best and often only path to victory. Just remember to cook them.
when possible never engage more then one enemy by your self, you kill slower then an AR, with out the the aim kick on every one aiming at you will lose. Try to catch them from behind or stick to the back of pitched battles and help your teammates by chasing enemies out of cover or using your splash to deal 100s of HPs to large groups, this may not net you a lot of kills but will turn a losing or pitched fire fight into a route and will get you one or two kills.
as always fight on your terms ALWAYS. the mass driver is not an aggressive weapon but if you force enemies to fight on your terms you can pull off some pretty ridiculous kills.
reload often and start looking to get more ammo at a clip and a half. If you have five rounds or less actively look for ammo because at best you have two kills left in you and against a smart opponent you're ******.
Lastly not to be an ass hole, but if you can't put your second round on them(deal damage not direct hit), at range, almost every time, by your second day of use, the MD may not be your your weapon.
oh and watch out for ******* blue berries they like to jump in front of your rounds and **** you up with the splash dmg. |
