When Scrambler Rifles come out, we will have two laser weapons. These laser weapons themselves form a 'subcategory' of weapon, but despite their possible advantages they are extremely similar to the average Assault Rifle only with slight tweaks. I believe that we can make a key difference to Laser Rifles by exchanging sophistication for adaptability.
By this I think that Laser and Scrambler Rifle should have the ability (like in EVE) to change their frequency crystal charges in quick succession. This would create a more defined role for energy weapons and it would give them a clearer advantage over highly sophisticated Assault Rifles.
My idea is fairly simple:
- A new equipment slot (in the place of Nano Hives) would be present, called a 'Crystal Holder' or something similar, but it would hold three different frequency crystals of choice and you can change the crystal by opening it with R2.
- The standard range of frequency crystals would be around ranging from Radio to Gamma to Standard/Multi, etc. And they would all have unique properties.
- Expensive crystals would last a long time but won't need to be bought often.
This would be a good addition because:
- It would create a more defined role for energy weapons over highly sophisticated Assault Rifles.
- It could lead to greater investment in energy weapons as they are fairly uncommon on the battlefield.
- It would give energy weapons a new edge while maintaining a disadvantage of taking up an equipment slot. |

While i like the idea of freq. crystals. there are a couple things that I would change from your post.
- Have the gun have an ammo slot that you can place a crystal in. (comes equiped with standard)
- You can only bring one crystal with you in a fit.
- When you die the crystal is lost.
This way if you feel like modding your gun or breaking out the good stuff, you better be sure that you can afford to lose it. |

I think its a great idea to bring some diversity to the energy weapon category and depth of personalization for the character.
If the various crystals had various functions and degrees of effecting structures, shields, armor and target's perceptions. I imagine allot of players would love to invest in the ability to mix and match crystals to a desired effect.
Say a crystal had the ability to disrupt the scanning ability of its target's radar for 3 seconds, inturn removing all the HUD information about his or her ammo, shields, armor and red/blue/green dots near them and on their radar for a few seconds.
Or another crystal that created a stream of energy that was devastating to a target's shields but had nearly zero effect on armor.
So on and so forth. What mad calculations and mashups would players invest in mastering each specific crystal usage and the ability to fuse those crystals?

I approve, as long as they are more interesting than the EVE range/damage tradeoff, and scorch never becomes a thing. |

I think all us non-laser weilders would be a bit pissed if lasers got ammo varients and every other weapon didn't |
