Hi,
I am in the process of setting up an informational website blog at http://dust514.info, with a wiki at http://wiki.dust514.info.
Blog goals: to provide news, information, and stories on Dust 514. In terms of stories, I am hoping that there will be a group of creative players willing to write interesting stories of their Dust or combined Dust/EVE stories that might be of interest to players of Dust. In terms of news and information, the current news items will give an example of the sort of news I hope to continue posting.
Wiki goals: to provide in-depth, technical information on Dust 514, and guides for players. Wiki's for me are typically an indispensable source of information. When I go there, I am usually looking for details that are not necessarily visible from within the game, or sometimes I am looking for an easy summary of detailed information available within the game. There is very little content on the wiki currently, but in the dropsuits page you will see I have begun entering data for a sortable table of suit stats. That kind of information, along with guides, is what I hope will be seen on the wiki.
And now, I'm hoping to find people willing to help make this a good community resource. Specifically, I'm looking for:
Guide writers: people interested in writing guides for players on specific topics, or perhaps even educational videos, to put on the wiki or on the blog site. Examples might be starter builds/paths for new players looking to specialise in particular roles. Show them what they can train, what equipment to aim for. Another example might be training videos.
Story writers: people to write interesting stories on their Dust or Dust/EVE combined adventures for the blog site.
Technical writers: people willing to help flesh out the wiki with detailed, correct, and useful information.
CSM candidates: it seems a handful of Dust players are considering running for CSM to represent Dust players. Perhaps it would be useful if you had protected pages detailing your platform on the wiki (clearly marked as such, so that it is not confused with the typical non-partisan ideal style of the rest of the wiki. Please contact me if this interests you!
Things on my near todo list: * More information on Wiki! * New colour style for the Wiki to be more appropriate for dust
Contact me here, or via email at [email protected] if you're interested in helping out. The latter is probably better, since I will need to organise access details if you're going to be doing more detailed help.
The wiki is, of course, available to editing to anyone currently (settings may change if spam becomes an issue). So you can dive into that straight away.
Thanks for your time!
(Note for CCP: I have tried contacting for information on using art assets, and heard no reply. I've included a disclaimer that I've noticed other websites using, and have made use of an image from the press kit. If this is not satisfactory, please let me know and I will fix it asap) |

Right!
I take it the implied question here is, "Why have you bothered to create a wiki when there's already a perfectly serviceable one *here*?" This is a good question, and perhaps there is no good answer.
Some of my motivations are: * I think a Dust514.info website *should* have a wiki if it's truly going to be an informational resource for Dust players. It seems incomplete for a .info website for a game to lack such a thing * I don't like Wikia - far too much advertisement spam and other extras that really clutter up the space...I'm hoping to avoid this as much as I can
Wikia no doubt has its own advantages, too! So rather than try to answer that good question more satisfactorily, I think I shall for the most part ignore it :) |

That will be very useful if they do. |

Finn Kempers wrote:I dont mean any disrespect, but I have been slaving away on wikia.dust514.com filling in stuff. For it feels like all day yesterday when i could have been playing, I sacrificed for pulling info and doing all in game assault rifles. I have also done all the equipment such as repair tools etc. too. However feel free to contribute stuff already not done.
It sounds like my creation of an alternative wiki option has left you feeling like I've wasted your efforts. I'm offering an alternative, which I am hoping will be of value. It may not be, but I hope it is. If the dust514.info wiki was to be used, your effort would not be wasted. I took a look at some of the equipment, and your work does look good. Just as a point of interest, the wiki code translates over almost identically, so it would be quite easy for someone to migrate your efforts over were someone so inclined.
A template would probably be a good option for equipment, which I may put in.
Also, dust514.info is intended as more than just a wiki. There is still room for further community services! |

Winsaucerer if for no other reason than how professionally and respectfully you have handled yourself in this thread I will check out your site. I wish more forum posters behaved in such a refreshing manner. You sir get some likes.
Thankyou for your praise, it is genuinely good to hear!
As you visit my site, I want to remind that the information is quite sparse currently (hence, my original post!). My aim is to try to add one new thing to the wiki each day, as well as add at least one item on the main site each day. Hopefully others will have interest in contributing too, but at least with my efforts alone there should be some value to the community.
And with that, I'm off to bed. |

Finn Kempers wrote: Hmm I looked at it, I'm tbh not a fan of the current format of stats for it. If however design as well as stats do identically transfer I would be happy. I would however first have to consult jenza who created the wiki if its an idea. Atm though it looks like EVE spreadsheets gone Dust with worse formatting over on your Dust wiki, so I'd have to decline on the current format you have over there.
I took a look at the license on the wikia dust514 wiki, and have used the same license for wiki.dust514.info (it seems a reasonable choice). As such, the license permits me to take information from that wiki to another, as long as it's under the same license. I've quickly copied over some pages, just as a demonstration of how it works, as well as uploading the appropriate missing images. Now you can see an example of your work: http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Militia_Drop_Uplink
Now that the images are present, you can simply copy the raw source over and it works.
The formatting is pretty much the same with just a couple of issues: * The colour style does not suit the wiki - this is not a biggie, as I'm going to give the wiki a darker look anyway, so it will probably look much better after that * The 'Required Skills' box is probably a bit too far to the right - this is because the wiki.dust514.info site is able to make near-full use of all screen space, while the wikia one is fixed width, with some of that taken up by advertisements (which is something I hope to avoid, insofar as I can handle the hosting costs myself). So that should be a small fix to move it, which I can look at later
Having tested this, I think that a template for equipment would be very useful. A template defines the style and layout for information, and you just plug in the information. It allows you, for example, to update the layout or colours in one place, and have that update for all pages that make use of that template. That's a task for another time though! |

And for those of you who know about these sorts of things, I've struggled to get short url's working on this wiki. That's another item on my to-do list! I am not ignorant of it, it just turns out to be particularly difficult on this particular host. |

jenza aranda wrote:Im all for you creating your own wiki if you really want to, but straight copying and pasting all the work that i have been doing for months is kinda cheap...
im going to keep working on the wiki that i have been that has almost 300 pages now, im not going to use yours when a suitable wiki is already in existence. While i cant stop you from copy and pasting our info, i do say its quite cheap
I don't know who you are or what is your work, but may I point out that I said:
Quote:I've quickly copied over some pages, just as a demonstration of how it works
In all honesty, what I did copy is not in the way I would like it laid out. I was *simply* doing it as a demonstration to show Finn that his work - not yours - copies over without problem. If I happened to copy some of yours too (since I don't know who authored what), that was simply part of a demonstration and not at all something I intend to continue doing. I also said that this was a mere demonstration here: http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Talk:Equipment
If Finn wants to copy all his work over, he can. If he doesn't want to, then fine too. I do not like the insinuation that I am "cheaply" leaching off the work of others when: I have no intention to do so; such a thing is permitted by the license of the wiki anyway; and I will almost certainly get rid of it to change the layout myself anyway.
And so just to reiterate: It was merely a demonstration, it's a LONG way from "copying and pasting ALL the work", and I have no intention to do so. Does this mean you won't copy any material from my wiki, then?
I'm sorry that you feel this way. As mentioned earlier, I think there's value in a wiki that sits on a dust514.info domain, but also in one that is free of the extra spam that wikia carries. If you don't agree, I don't think I have any more powerful arguments to persuade you, and we will unfortunately go separate ways for now. |

I just wanted to add, if you do see the value in a hopefully spam free wiki with a name like wiki.dust514.info, then as I have demonstrated the work you have done will not at all be wasted. So it's really just a question of what you (or we) think is the better location.
If it happens that you are the one who set up the wikia dust514 wiki, and part of your interest is in being a manager or authority on the website, then I'm more than happy to discuss putting you in a position of having that level of control. I gave my email in the op, so feel free to contact me.
It would be good if we could come to some agreement about what is the best option for the community. |

In fact, if you could contact me in private via email anyway, I would really appreciate that. I'm not sure how to get a hold of you for a private chat other than in here or perhaps an evemail. |
