Or given any other purpose other than a fancy game timer? I feel they are kind of pointless right now.
Actually i'm not even sure how I feel about these MCCs being here now. The only thing I know is that they have potential. If they are to exist, I feel that they
- should be a manned vehicle,
- they should be a mobile spawn center
- they should be vulnerable to orbital bombardments,
- they should be vulnerable to groups of ground installations/tanks,
- they should be able to be repaired if the situation calls for it,
- and they should be able to fire onto the battlefield with their cannons.
When the MCC actually becomes useful, it will make skirmish mode and future game modes involving MCCs much more dynamic and interesting. I can't even think of another game that has this kind of game play (maybe battlefield 2142, to an extent).
This is something I would hope to see during open beta, before full release.

It's been the plan from day one that the mcc will be player/corp owned, and flown by the commander (the one chosen to stay aboard the mcc during a match), the commander will get an rts type view (kind of like the overhead map) and will be responsible for deploying installations to the mercs. The mcc will be an asset just like everything else. It will more than likely be when we get conquest mode some time this year

Its planned, 2014 the earliest you might see this happen. On the heels of conquest mode where you'll be taking planets for your own self.
It will require a special suit to sit in the pod of the ship and control it. From here the player mostly has a command and conquer vibe to his game style. Directing Squads, ordering strikes or approving strikes, or calling down depots and crus or turrets as needed and moving the mcc and its targeting.
MCCs are about 120 million each on hull alone, + modules. Training the skill for one is probably a 10x or higher. Requires XL gun training and a corp isn't going to give a rookie an MCC either and you wont see them in public or FW matches but Null sec only matches. |

2142 also had the ability to board the other players ship after the shields went down to blow it up from the inside if you so desired. |
