First of all, I would like to point out that the ambition of this game is absolutely amazing, I really love how amazing everything is with tying into EVE online, however what I am mostly going to complain about is the actual GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE.
So I was in the closed beta a few months back and played it for at most 30 minutes and quit game and didn't play it for several months, there was so much wrong with this game which I will express below, because sadly, these issues are still here. After spending several months not playing the game and then coming back after several large updates, I was dissapointed to see that the gameplay experience was largely unchanged.
Like I said, the ambition and EVE tie-in of this game is impressive, and I'm sure there are many other things about this game that actually are very interesting, but the initial thing that draws you in (the gameplay experience) is very much terrible.
After the new updates, I am greeted with an impressive intro cutscene now, which I was happy to see, it gave me hopes that the game had undergone significant polish and improvements. Then I was taken to my captain's quarters (or whatever they are officially called) - This experience has not changed. It's cool to jog around the place and manage everything kind of like Mass Effect, but notice that I said "jog around," not WALK at a DEVASTATINGLY SLOW pace (is there a word for going slower than walking?... crawling?). This is simply just a joke, WHY would they not have fixed this terrible aspect of the game? Do the developers, beta testers, and gamers - does anyone - REALLY enjoy walking at this pace? It's a picky thing to talk about but it's something that you will be using so much in this game, nothing is efficient about walking at a seriously SLOW pace around a room to manage your online career, and efficiency in the EVE Universe is important, is it not?
Then I find my way in a match, I first want to say that the whole idea of seeing your teammates in a room and making plans and such is brilliant, I think it very cool.
So then your drop onto the map, this is where it all quickly unfolds. First you notice the visuals, the game doesn't exactly have much beauty it, it doesn't have an artistic style, or any kind of beauty to it, unlike EVE online which is very much polished. It almost looks like the game is being streamed to you, like it's not high-res or being upscaled, the framerate also doesn't seem very stable. This is a beta, so that can eventually change, I am aware. There is also supposedly a graphical update coming. I hope that it does change soon.
Then you walk forward, something about walking is wrong, maybe it's that you run slowly around the map, or maybe it's just that the maps are way too large for their own good, jumping is just very bad, to the point that it feels there is no use for jumping.
Then there is the overall environment, it feels very enclosed and "old," much like a PS2 game almost, where it feels like you're stuck in a tin can or something, like nothing is alive in the world, this has a lot to do with the lighting, the sound, and the atmosphere (smoke, fire, etc) simply not being there at all. Shooters like Battlefield 3 and Halo master environment with bright, beautiful lighting, quality sound and atmosphere that are believable.
Sound is something I'd like to point out, it's TERRIBLE, the gun/blaster sounds are just bad and really need some work, this all contributes towards the feel of the game experience. If you want good blaster sounds, refer to other games like Halo which have echo and bass to the plasma and sound menacing and believable, I saw that the sound designers are releasing an update or recently have and I HOPE that they have fixed this.
I feel the maps are way too big as I stated before, to the point that it's basically a bunch of flat land with a few buildings that are open at the bottom which just push the flat land onward and there are minimal objects or "sense" to the maps I have played, there are no trees, rocks, grass, hills, or things that really "fill in" empty, unused space, the environment also takes into this also, very plain and dim.
I know people may hate me to bring up Halo, Battlefield, or even Call of Duty, but there is a reason that these shooters succeed, because they have mastered either movement, environment, sound, or all of them, all tie together to make an enjoyable gameplay experience. I'm not saying for this game to be like Call of Duty, or Battlefield 3, or Halo, but I'm saying to take note off of their mechanics, there is a reason that the games are successful.
I would very much like for this game to be a good one, but for me, it is unbearable, if it were a great experience, all of my friends would be playing it now, instead they are all sharing what I feel about the game too, I have asked them.
Basically, it doesn't seem as though the developers are putting their absolute fullest passion to make the gameplay experience to be absolutely perfected, instead they are putting all of their resources towards EVE integration and not towards the most important thing, the gameplay.

Sobriety Denied wrote: No it's because they spend millions on aggressive marketing. COD looks like sht even BO2. I have no idea why people think that game looks so great for, everything is so square and edged. There's nothing special at all about the textures; they paid many ppl off to say "the game looks great!" in reviews if you say this enough times people will begin to believe it. BF3 the graphics ARE good but that game is noob through and through.
I agree that call of duty looks like crap, Modern Warfare 2 was the only one that ever actually looked "good", however, they still have a feasible art style and can run at full 1080p at 60 frames a second. The game is successful based off of it's controls and balance, and I'm not a fan of Call of Duty but I do acknowledge WHY it's successful. Battlefield 3 has beautiful graphics, nice controls, and great maps along with great game modes, Battlefield's 3 maps are big but make sense and are occupied by trees, rocks, hills, etc. "The game is 'noob' through and through" is not very justifiable for me.
"Also do you have HDIM and go max quality"
Yeah, I run my PS3 through HDMI (I guess what's what you meant) in full 1080p on my 42 inch TV. |
