FIxing the broken and terrible spawn system on the maps in skirmish with obvious problems (like in the vid) and in ambush is the single most important thing that can be done to improve the gameplay experience for new players.
Those that claim it is the playe'rs fault, or that there are alternative solutions like uplinks, or that a terrible game mechanic somehow makes for a more authentic or hardcore experience once you learn to love it are full of crap.
That we are constantly spawning out of storage containers or walls or girders or rocks only to be gunned down before we have a chance to turn around just doesn't make sense. Not in terms of lore, or the available technology in New Eden or even military strategy. What genius would design a gun that would explode and kill you every time you aimed it at an enemy an pulled the trigger? But that is how the current spawn system often works.
That said, I am fully in favor of spawn trapping as a valid tactic in DUST 514 warfare. But it should be difficult to set up a trap and you should have to work for it, scheme, plan, and put some effort into bringing it off.
But as this video ably demonstrates, the current system where you pop out of a wall in a preset location, not even really near the objective you have chosen to spawn in on, only to get popped, is just taking advantage of poorly implemented game mechanics. The deaths are cheap, meaningless, and undeserved.
Also, team chat should be on by default. Even if most new players have no idea how voice communication works in this game, if there is even one player on a team with a mic howling about the conditions on the field and everyone else could hear them, it would help. Better to have voice chat on and make players figure out how to turn it off and use the system if they don't like it, than to have it off and never even used at all. And at least that way players would know that there is a free and fairly easy to use (once you notice it) option for voice communication. |

In the meantime, use your tools. Turn on your mic and let your team know which point is camped. Use uplinks and/or call in a dropship with a cru.
CCP have done an often amazing and commendable job working out the kinks in this game, it has seen so much improvement i certain areas that it is difficult to imagine what it was like to play through some of the earlier builds.
But the spawning system has been an ongoing and nagging issue for an entire year now, and though they have done some tinkering with the it, and made some good improvements on some maps, we haven't seen anything really inspired or solid in terms of the spawn mechanic. (edit* except for maybe the drop ship base jump. That was really cool)
The thing that gets me is that this is one of the few games to make the very concept of re-spawning part of the foundation of the game, in the lore, the backstory, and all of that. That is what DUST 514 is, this endless war of clones that fight and die just to fight and die again. So you have this elaborate and compelling reason to do what most FPS games just sort of brush under the rug, re-spawn into battle.
But the way it lays out in the actual game is very lackluster and frustrating. "Oh look, I just popped out of a wallGǪ and got shotGǪ great." |

DUST Fiend wrote:Lol, saw the first 5 seconds, saw the area....it's THAT area. I think anyone that's played this beta for any amount of time knows that spawning on that CRU can be a bad, bad day.
The raspberries aren't spawning on the CRU though. They are spawning at an objective and getting funneled into that one spawn point and only that one spawn point because the other team has all the other spawn options locked down.
When you look at the objective on the overhead map it is nowhere near that spawn hole. It is behind the guys that are shooting into the spawn trap. But when you spawn in, instant death. You aren't really spawning at a location you've chosen, there are plenty of other decent point near the objective to spawn into, but no, one spawn point, you dead.
And, yeah, anyone who has played the beta for any length of time has adapted to the horrible spawn system. Exactly. Which makes it even worse for all of the other players out there who are just getting into this game and aren't jaded about dying over and over again while just trying to get back into the game. WIthout even getting the chance to shoot back. So even if they fix that one spawn trap on the one map, the entire system still needs much work. |
