Hi there mercs, Calamity here. I don't normally post on the forums but today for some odd reason i decided to look for posts involving my name oddly enough. To my surprise i'm glad that i have gained a bit of infamy for my use of my Shotgun *maybe even instill a bit of fear in a few*. This post is here for 2 reasons;
1). To praise a few shot gunners i have had the pleasure of fighting along side or against. The shotgun users are as follows, Stelios, Laureli Libertas, DTOracle and slim shotty. Well done fellas glad to see more people learning the way of the shotty and tip of the hat cause even i have to start freaking out when i see your names and hear the dreaded *Kachink!*.
2) I read on a post about someone having to look for information on builds etc and how difficult finding information about peoples builds happens to be. I will impart all my "secrets" and or limited knowledge on to those willing to listen and learn how to use a shotgun in battle. Everyone plays their own style and this is not a set in stone guide but i would like to help anyone willing to learn including the new beta players or any older player that want to try something new. My goal is to one day see the shotgun used more in combat more often despite its drawbacks in certain situations.
So here goes.
First things first, after much trial an error in my early days as a scout shotgun wielder I have learned a few valuable lessons. Don't think your invincible and survivability is key. I have learned to shed the scout suit in favor of the assault suit type B *for the buffed shields*. I recommend this as a start for most mercs that are already comfortable with assault use. Its easy to spec into and provides much needed CPU and slots that you simply can't get on a scout suits early on *also dirt cheap*. Your goal is to live as long as possible under fire because trust me, the range on the shotgun indicates that you are going to be taking heavy hits from anything you wing on the first shot that isn't lethal. I have spec'ed into shield extenders lvl 4 for the complex extenders, and basic armor plates (lvl 1) to make up for the lack of armor on your suit. Total, even on a basic fit, you should be nearing the hp equivalent to a starter heavy's HP with much more mobility and a scary disposition.
Secondly, Range. This can be substituted as the primary thing to focus on depending on your play style. If your hit and run to start, id recommend range first and survival second. If your like me and like to get up close and personal and hug people as you whisper sweet nothings into their ear while popping off a round into their sternum, go suit first. Any way, range range range... I'm currently proficiency lvl1 wanting lvl3 range. Nothing is worse than being on open ground and being backpedaled to death. And nothing is scarier than being torn to shreds as you backpedal, or so id assume that's what its like when I'm chasing some one.
Third, The gun itself. In my starting days i used to level shotgun use and range at the same time. This works wonders when there's a points reset but its not fully recommended due to shotgun really being pretty close to the same all across the board minus the massive spike in CPU use when you hit Proto. Avoid the militia shotgun unless you have a good proficiency in its use, its slow, has fewer rounds than the base lvl1 shotgun and the real killer is its ridiculously slow reload.
Finally, now that you know a bit about my build *not much to it really* I would like to impart a bit of friendly advice for combat. These are things some people already know and do so nothing should be too surprising. Close the gap on your target, I like to pretend i don't see people and run around a corner till i see the dot close a bit on me then I like to jump out and start running at them while doing a Xena warrior princess shout. Be creative, find cover let your target come to you or if they are really bad bum rush them while making an S shaped pattern and jumping in the direction you are going to throw people off. Get used to timing your shots instead of spamming, nothing is better than seeing someone jump as they are firing an AR and taking the time to place your cross-hair where they will land and Fire a round. Practice jumping and shooting and strafing and shooting and running stopping and shooting. Get your timing down. Get your trajectory down. Can't stress it enough people. When you jump and shoot your shot will go with the direction of your jump so aim for the legs. If you jump to the right aim for the left leg, if you jump for the left aim for the right. If you jump down on some one ninja like, make sure to aim for the head, odds are you will hit the chest or wing the bread basket and that's 165% efficiency damage in one go. Always always keep your gun topped off, the major advantage to the shotgun is that you can reload and fire faster than any other gun in the game. Don't wait to fully reload JUST FIRE THE DAMN THING! Running is your best friend, if you can avoid walking do so, the more you run the lower your profile and the better your odds are of catching someone with their pants down. Watch your stamina, its nice to jump a lot, it sucks to crawl away limping when you get riddled with lead when you realize you can't run around a corner cause you were show boating. If your target is running place the shot ahead of them of course. Don't be afraid to pop a few rounds at a distance, this helps you learn what your maximum range is and in most cases peoples reaction time is slow to turn. This gives you a bit of an edge once the gap is closed seeing as they are now hurt and your full up when they face you. That's it, Remember your a merc not a solider so do everything you can to get the job done. Shotgun on friends, Hope this helps and if you have specific questions mail me in game. I'm friendly. It's the shotgun that really makes me do horrible things. Horrible.... HORRIBLE things. >.> |

So as far as scan precision yes i miss it, as far as reduction its good to spec into it despite your suit. eventually once i get my basics down i customize at will and yes profile reduction is sexy. Besides the scan signal between a scout and assault is very negligible. As far as how much you want to get into it, tha'ts all personal. I prefer a frontal assault with good cover. Also id love to see a ton of little annie and calamity clones, I want to inspire people to try a shotgun and if they love it then my job is done. Further more me and annie speculate anywhere between 12-15 pellets at 30+ dmg a pop. hope this answers the above posts :D |

np, don't despair. It takes much practice to get used to the way the gun works best. I have died countless upon countless times in rage till eventualy i got a good feel for the weapon. practice practice practice and im sure it will pay off :)

haha! True it may seem cheap but the way i see it, I'm a merc not a soilder. I will do everything in my power to get the job done. Plus there are large downsides to the shotgun just like any other gun. To each their own i know for me I hate getting killed by a shotgun too but i have to give props to those that use it becuse ive been on the dying end so many times and i know that its not always sunshine and rainbows using one. |

ROFL! I can't believe i glossed over that duty Lorilai haha! Also your right, side arm? what side arm! I typically only use nova knives when i can spare the cpu, not recommended. A side arm is good for some people but i typically never have a secondary, kudos on mentioning that. |

actualy you bring up a good point and this is something ive been trying to test. If the enemy sees you you show up regardless. As you sprint past someone and duck for cover you reduce the amount of time your on radar. On top of that if you notice a lot of scouts go "invisible" when running. Since i first noticed when i started playing the beta that running seems to lower your chances of popping up on radar and while walking your profile shows more vividly. Not sure if this was intentional seeing as how due to some stamina restrictions you tend to run less than walk on some suits. As far as i can tell running keeps your profile down which is how if im feeling frisky can blind side a person by running my butt off when flanking. May or may not be true, but so far its never really let me down as much as walking. |
