Hiya, just wanted to put forth a suggestion for a training/simulation mode where you basically just do target practice and can drive your vehicles around in an isolated setting without fear of it blowing up. The idea is simply to allow people to get the feel for a new piece of equipment or a vehicle before they take it into the battlefield where their mistakes will cost them ISK (or Aurum.) If there are other threads suggesting something like this, point me to them.
The reason I am making this suggestion is because of an embarrassing piloting error I made with my first dropship. I understand the idea of "don't drop it if you can't afford to lose it", but to lose it because you couldn't figure out how to pilot it and then never learn how to pilot it because the only way to learn is on the battlefield is a bit annoying... Even a militia dropship can be expensive to someone who hasn't had a chance to learn to fly them properly.
I called down my first dropship roughly two weeks ago. After climbing in, I tried to get a feel for the controls and next thing you know; my dropship is nose up, then upside down, and falling towards the ground, it crashes and explodes (with a few teammates in it) and just I lost my first dropship one minute into a battle without learning anything... I have since been too afraid to buy another dropship and haven't been able to gain any further understand of the controls.
The ideas for this mode would be: -Allows players to get a feel for the game controls before jumping into a multiplayer game and possibly dragging their team down (like I did for a few days.) -No skill points or isk gained or equipment lost on death in this mode. -Allows players to get a feel for certain weapons and equipment before jumping into battle with it. -Allows players to learn the controls for dropships without worrying about losing them to pilot error like I did.
Other stuff that would be nice: -Allow players to try out equipment before they put points into the requirements and buy the equipment. -Simulator with holographic targets. -A skirmish mode where you and some corp mates can basically goof around while waiting for everyone else to be online. |

It would be viable if I could send ISK from my EVE character, 3 million is half a trip for my Mackinaw. But even if I could, that's still 20 dropships, probably only need ten to really get a feel for the controls. Oh well.
But yeah, Coleus has a point, the amount of isk to set up two corporations is enough to buy plenty of dropships.
And Koro, you don't have to train into the dropship skills right away, there is a Militia dropship which is cheaper and requires no skills but sacrifices tank and has a lot less PG, CPU and slots to work with (I think, haven't looked at the numbers and can't at the time of this post.) They're still expensive, just not as much. I think they're 150k each and come loaded with a shield booster and two missile turrets. |

I finally started buying dropships again to try to learn and I've just been using starter dropsuits to balance out the cost. Lost a few dropships to pilot error and one to actual fire (this one lasted almost a quarter of the game before someone shot it down, next one started losing control and smashed into a building.) I still haven't figured out how to land or slow down forward movement without going full reverse instead... |

There isn't a way to transfer isk between Dust and EVE right now (to my knowledge anyways), so 3 million is still quite a bit for a Dust player. If I could, I probably would have already done that idea myself since 3 million isk is less than half a load of ore on my Mackinaw. |
