I wondered how long it would take for the Certificate system to be suggested for DUST. I support it not only for giving you something to show for your efforts, but also because Certs in EVE are used to aid in skillplans - this is because almost all of them are based in the core-skills.
I also like how you incorporated in-game usage of the given skills - this is necessary for DUST because one needs to have combat experience with a weapon as well to be considered "good" at it. I recommend requiring killing within the weapon's optimal ranges - which are estimated by your HUD by effectiveness percentages. Full-cert example of this idea using a different weapon:
Laser Rifle - Standard certification >L3 in Laser Rifle Operation >L2 in Light Weapon Sharpshooter >Have pre-requisite certificates (up to CCP) >10 Infantry kills at a damage efficiency rating of at least 80% as calculated on HUD. The holder of this certification has shown front-line capacity in equipping Laser Rifles up to Advanced Rank, and can effectively use them in combat situations. The holder is aware that all Laser Rifles are ineffective at close range, but are nearly unmatched at marksman-range engagements. Unlocks: Viziam color scheme for Laser Rifles. (that is the Advanced, right?)
Now, as for in-game unlocks, Certifications should grant cosmetic-only unlocks, but they should not be consumable. The only thing I can think of that can work in DUST are camouflage+color patterns. In order for this to work, they have to:
>applicable to whatever item/skill the cert applies to - dropsuits, vehicles, weapons, whatever - If you wanted to get fancy, you could even mess with the shield+armor animations as rewards for tanking certs.
>Be recognizable from other patterns - this has potential intimidation factor too: say a Sagaris came up, but its Heavy Booster animation had lightning-shaped hex borders. That would indicate that he has a high-level Cert in EM hardening - meaning you're going to have to throw more than one Flux Grenade to take his shield down!
>Not be confused with Faction patterns - I know it's similar to above - Remember that most Faction ships in EVE have a unique camo pattern - Bloodraiders have "blood splatter", CN has that awesome blue/grey camo, and they need to be highly recognizable as such. On the other hand, getting to splash Faction camo on your Sica would have a hilarious effect on some newberries
>Be optional - Although that Sagaris situation has a tactical application, you generally don't want to telegraph your strengths - you want an equal opponent to assume that you're weak until the last second. Making them optional lets you choose between intimidation and not making yourself a big target.
>Be grounded in New Eden - this is a sci-fi MMO, not a frat party. I don't want to see people flying dropships with patterns that look like they came out of a certain "celebrity"-owned, leopard-filled closet. *cough* Red Tiger *cough* I will, however, want to see the odd LAV bearing the CreoDron logo proudly on its hood, advertising the corporation to the enemy, the ally, and anyone else that cares to look. And you know Quafe will want in on the action. Simple color changes work too - so long as I don't see any neon or "bold" colors, we're OK here. |
