I have been curious to try the Nova Knives out as I have used similar weapons in other FPS games, but I have a few questions before sinking ~300k SP into it.
p.s. Sorry if some of these sound stupid, but I want to be certain of of the answers.
1. Nova Knives are sidearms that do ONLY melee damage, so does the skill "Hand-to-Hand Combat" and the associated Biotics apply?
2. On a similar note to question 1, I would assume that the "Sidearm Damage Modifier" Mod would apply since it is a sidearm?
3. I know that they have no "ammo capacity" or "reload time", but I was wondering if the "Sidearm Sharpshooter" skill allowed for use of Nova Knives at a slightly farther then direct melee range?
4. I know that you run faster with a Scrambler Pistol then a Swarm Launcher for example, how do the Nova Knives compare to a Scrambler Pistol? (I would be using a scout suit, most likely the 'Dragonfly')
Thanks for the information! |

Anyone know the answers to these questions?
I am particularly interested in finding out the answer to my first question! (does hand-to-hand combat skill apply?) |

You know... I actually don't know, I should test that out this week. |

Simply put:
The Nova Knife isn't worth the hassle. It actually does less damage then a weapon melee and charging it really isn't worth the trouble because if your enemy turns, they'll put holes in you before you even have a chance to take out your primary and fire back.
So, to conclude: Don't use the Nova knife. |

1. No. Nova Knives are not affected by the hand-to-hand skill book. That skill book only applies to the melee (the butt end of your rifle or your fist).
2. Yes, it would apply. It is a side arm after all.
3. No. The sharpshooter skill book does not apply.
4. Damage wise, when properly skilled into it, the pistols do more damage. But speed wise there is no difference. Like any other side arm you just sprint faster when you equip it (as in you're holding it in your hands).
For best results, go for Prototype Nova Knives. The 0.5 sec charge time will make a world of a difference.
PRO TIP:
There is currently a glitch that enables you to sprint while holding a charge. Simply start the charge while doing a melee and hold it there. The charge will remain even when you sprint until discharged. Please note that each melee takes up a chunk of your stamina. |

So, to conclude: Don't use the Nova knife. Well even so if he wants to play with the knifes let him do it. I'd opt to try all weapons other then listening to other people claim it's crap when, as we all know, "Everyone who disagrees with me is an idiot."
tl:dr answer the question or get out. |

I actually find it insulting that my fist is more dangerous than my knife. I hope CCP fixes that problem. |

Regular melee should probably do significantly less damage. It's pretty crazy as it is, doing 130 damage before skills. How can you really expect to have melee weapons if your regular butt stroke will almost 2-shot most people? |

I've gotten a OHK with basic Nova Knives, with only a single level in NK Operation. I'm fairly certain there are two strikes when you attack with Nova Knives, although you do have to be very close for the first hit to register [I believe you first slash then lunge, so the second strike has a bit more range than the first]. I came across this in Skirmish while my enemy was hacking an objective. I got close enough to molest him and did a one shot when he had full armour and shields. That did the trick.
As for speed, I haven't really used pistols much, so I can't compare, but I can positively say that on a Dragonfly scout with even Militia kinetic catalysers, when you have the Nova Knives out you haul ass whenever you sprint. |
