Assault rifles are actually plasma rifles. What fictional sci-fi weapon is supposed to have longer range, again?
LRs kill people in about 2 seconds at very long ranges. They aren't hard to aim, and if you're out in the open they can drop you and your entire squad before anyone can "get in close" or whatever other solutions. LRs should be good at range, but they shouldn't be nearly instantly lethal once they've been firing a bit, either. Considering it's a weapon you don't need to compensate for in terms of recoil, and its heat mechanic is a very minor issue, it is fairly clearly in need of tuning at this point. |

They freeze on overheat like an HMG, Remove 40-60% of my shields at full health on an overheat, Suck at mid-close range, and use almost 1/4 of their ammo per controlled shot. They are specialized weapons and should remain that way. I would only use one if I have a drain-able nanohive.

I advocate nerfs for sniper rifles as well. I'm aware of how overpowered those weapons also are, and have been making threads about how I feel CCP ought to change them since sometime this summer.
It's only enemies who are very close to the LR that are hard to hit. Even minimally intelligent LR users will simply avoid being the first person into terrain where there could be someone hiding around the corner. The issue of the weapon being bad at close ranges doesn't justify them being incredibly powerful at medium and long ranges, as it is easy enough to make close-range fighting a rare event as a LR user.
The good news is that CCP isn't always afraid of the crying that accompanies needed balance changes. A number of months ago we had swarm launches that could one-shot most people as well as destroy vehicles. CCP nerfed them, even though people like you insisted they were balanced, because of X and Y limitations, and whatever variation of that misplaced patronization about using proper strategy and tactics so that you don't die to these weapons. Laser rifles will be nerfed, and Dust will be a better game for it, just as it improved once swarm launchers were nerfed against infantry. |

They'll never be ARs, because they have no damage degradation, and they're not very good close-up. Pretty well the opposite of ARs. They sort of compete directly with tactical ARs, but that's an issue that exists currently anyway. Reducing their power would make them useful still, just maybe not so brainlessly useful. Seriously, a weapon with no dispersion, no recoil, a huge magazine, only somewhat limiting heat build-up, and no damage degradation... you can't really expect it to just melt faces like it currently does. |
