One of the newblets scootin about here and getting my bearings. Taken a shine to the HMG (Always enjoyed heavy in TF2 :P) and by playing intelligently I've been racking up the kills and leading the team around (Puggers seem to love to follow me, usually a good thing).
Decided to check out the burst HMG and while it seems pretty cool in concept, It's a bit confounding. Maybe it's just the last few maps being the moon/ash world with virtually no close combat, but while it seems like it should be the ultimate in ranged HMG, it just spews bullets and overheats fast without doing much.
I can get 4 bursts out of it before it overheats, it seems to take 3 to kill someone even in close quarters, and the range/accuracy over range does not seem overly impressive.
Is this weapon good with 4/5 skills for overheat and range? Am I probably trying to use it at longer ranges than I should? Or is this weapon a bit of a wash? |

The Assault HMG is better at range as it has a much higher max range and higher optimal range. The Burst HMG's advantage is that the RPM is much higher, so you can kill people quicker if you have them perfectly aligned, but the range is no different from a standard HMG. Overheating depends on rounds fired, this is why it overheats so much faster than the normal one. Use Assault HMG if you want range. Or just skill up Heavy Weapon Sharpshooter and use the normal HMG. |

I've had some success with the burst against other heavies simply because they're such a big target...but honestly that's very situational and more me being bored than it actually being a good weapon.
Standard HMG's are the only thing you need to use, period. The Assault HMG has longer range but it takes too much ammo and too much time for it to kill someone wearing anything better than a starter fit. |
