Well, this thread is going places.
Back to topic, CCP have mentioned that they want to be able to add, update, and remove content from the market on the fly. THe market will be dynamic and organic, I would assume, much more like a living breathing market (which is what our militaries primarily have fought in the service of during the last century) than an edifice where content is permanent and immutable.
In the future there very well may be items that show up in the market for a limited time and are quickly taken away.
However, the hope is that once a player buys something like that they can keep it, use it, horde it, or re-sell it, immediately or at a later date for cold hard profit.
If the game becomes what we have been invited to hope for, the market will always be changing. And it will be up to us to survive its ebbs and flow, or seek to control them.
One way CCP can balance the items in game in the future would be to, instead of tweaking how a particular weapon deals damage, just take it off the market. Make a new version that sucks, and release that with a new name. Players who had purchased the original would have an advantage, but the item would become so rare if it was consumable that it might not ever be used outside tournaments, important battles in important wars, etc. So it wouldn't be used by scrubs to hold an advantage over other players.
I hope this kind of thing does take place. I am looking forward to the next few years in DUST with much anticipation.
But yeah, right now we have a long ways to go still. The great thing is, we will never reach the end, there will always be something new just around the corner. |

But yeah, right now we have a long ways to go still. The great thing is, we will never reach the end, there will always be something new just around the corner. You are assuming that the stuff on the market will not eventually be produced by the players in a player-controlled market. Just like Eve Online, eventually almost every item on the market will not only be consumable but also produced by players. This means that those players will decide the price of the items and thus jack them up if they like. But due to the competitive nature of open markets in a player-controlled environment (as seen on Eve) other players can choose to undercut the sellers to attract the buyer's attention thus cutting into the profits of others. CCP is not known for pulling items off the market once the market is under player control and said items can be produced by everyone who has spare time.
Not at all. In no way.
I am assuming that the full market inegration is going to be at least 2 years away. Judging by how long we have been in beta. But between the end of open beta (where they have more leeway to push around how all the various weapons work) and the completely player run market, with price fixing and cartels, and all that sort of economic warfare stuff that will be lots of fun, there will be a period of time when items are not player produced.
It was just one idea of how CCP might use the market kduring that time. Maybe not even a very good or well founded one. But they have said they are testing their ability to make changes to the market on the fly.
The first person mining, manufacturing and marketing sim that DUST cvould eventually become is a long way off yet. |
