I've looked at weapons tables, but I can't find the range of mass drivers. What range are they?
Are they like a grenade launcher?
I've heard they aren't good 1 vs 1, so how are they used? |

The range should be mentioned in the item description. Scroll through the tabs with R2/L2, it's in one of them (don't have PS3 running now).
It might not be listed, though, the reason being it is a grenade launcher as you mentioned. Therefore damage is not related to range. You lob the grenades in an arc, and you might have hundred+ meter range from a rooftop, but only twenty+ on flat ground.
They are not very good in 1v1, that's true. My preferred method is working in a squad to support my teammates by wreaking havoc, and for area denial. The blast will throw off the enemy's aim, which is really helpful in helping out your teammates to kill them.
Main problems with MD's are very limited ammo and weak damage with base skill. In competent hands MD becomes a potent weapon.
A bit more in my guide here. (search for demoman on the page) |

I'm not entirely sure if they have a specific range based on distance travelled or time spend flying. Like it was mentioned above they fly in an arc. You can probably get them to about 150-200m before they dissapear. They do have a max 'range' whereafter they dissapear without exploding.

Get someone in your squad to "spot" for you and you can act like a mini mortar. I have a vision of a squad of MD's setting up shop on a nanohive and laying down heavy cover to an objective |

with alot of practice they can be used to get kills from a couple hundred yards. there best use is from firing from elevation down, vice versa they are very weak shooting up. i get plenty of 1vs1 kills vs assaults, scouts stand even a worse chance, and it takes about all six rounds to kill a heavy. the visual distortion can buy you time in a 1vs1 because it causes panic and it's hard to see through the smoke causing half your enemies to flee and you end up shootng them in the back
it's on par with an assualt rifle DPS wise but it does huge busrt damage. you often will bait your enemy to come to you as you wait around the corner with MD aimed at where he's going to appear because you trick him into following you then spring an ambush. if you it him with the 1rst 2 rounds chances are high you will win the fight. knowing when to run and when to aggress is key. there will be times you kill 5 ppl in 3 seconds, other times you will fail miserably.
as a troll weapon you'll have whole squads form up just to take you down if you cause them problems with it |

i shot into the air and it exploded in an airburst it does have some sort of fused timer if it never impacts |

I stand corrected then, if you want you could time them at different angles and see if the time for their explosion is always the same as it would give us some more information to work with. |

for some reason they only explode in the air tho when you point them straight up often times you will not see the explosion if you launch them horizontally they do fade out after about 300 yards, but i'm guessing this is a graphic/draw distance issue and anyone nearby would see them explode even tho the launcher did not see the explosion
or maybe they are effected by gravity and cannot travel as far when flying straight up allowing the launcher to see the airburst |
