I use a Hauppauge HD-PVR with an HDfury (to convert HDMI -> component) and a HDMI splitter (one HDMI to HDFury, and the other to my receiver) so I don't have to set my PS3 for component out to record. Also this way I can record on-demand anytime without having to switch the PS3 output from HDMI.
As for screenshots, I simply use VLC player and play the video and grab a snapshot after pausing. the quality isn't bad at all.
I've been using this setup for many many years now, but I'm sure there is much better ways to record PS3 gameplay nowadays. The one positive about the HD-PVR however, is that it records via component, so therefore no annoying Sony-infested HDMI based DRM can stop me from recording whatever I want. |
