So, you want to be a sniper?
Well you should be prepared to undergo possibly the most difficult role in the battlefield.
It technically is, but this is EVE universe now, nothing is ever really fair, right? So why should I tell you the tips needed to survive and be effective as a sniper?
Well.. I would start by saying what tactical value a sniper can be if used effectively. I can go on and on about the extreme advantages you have under extremely controlled situations. But no
its overly simplified. So simplified that although i dont want to admit it, but anyone of little skill can actually use it well.
And its killing the sniper role itself. I know this because IGÇÖve been taught how. And although that matters little, because itGÇÖs a game. the people IGÇÖve joined squads with have noticed my effectiveness. But that's not the point, I want to point out a few things however. The first being the actual role itself:
You are a pawn.
ThatGÇÖs as simple as it can get, you are a tool used by your commanders to gain a better tactical advantage, really bring in mind the words" a sniper is the eyes of the battlefield.
Now to actually apply it to DUST 514. the rifle is weak compared to other weapons, lower ROF, small clip size etc. etc. the only thing that probably give it credit where its due is high damage, making it two kills, or even one shot, one kill method over extremely long distances. Only thing I know slower than that is probably the heavy variants of weapons + swarm launchers. A sniperGÇÖs role is to reduce the combat effectiveness of an enemy and demoralize them in the process.
The demoralizing part is nailed on the dot. Nowadays who doesnGÇÖt view that GÇ£sniperGÇ¥ the way they would view a fly buzzing around their ears?. An extreme annoyance.
But reducing an enemies effectiveness? HmmGǪ thatGÇÖs a bit difficult.
Thinning troop numbers could be one way to put it, but then again we are immortal MercenariesGǪ. How can you, as a sniper increase your combat effectiveness at limiting an enemies combat abilities? Well the first thing I would think of is high value targets; commanders, squad leaders, someone with a say in the theatre of war. but on a later date.
the question im asking is: What can test the meddle of those who wish to become snipers yet limiting the numbers of snipers? i have three ideas:
- first thing we can do to the role is re-introduce sway. Yes, we are clones, yes we are immortal, and yes we are unparalleled in terms of raw fighting ability but we are still human (Despite the sleeper NI-5 implants) no matter how good we are there should always be sway in all the ranks, snipers are no exception. Reducing it can require a skill all in itself GÇ£Scope sway reductionGÇ¥ 5x or something among the lines. With the possible introduction of weapon customization features, we will inevitably see more sniper scopes, but with that you can greatly increase the scope sway for each higher magnification level.
- you can implement a breathing mechanic, so that when the time comes, you can stop sway for a very limited amount of time until you run out of air. also another skill can be used to increase the time keeping the recticule still. " Tactical Breathing" 5x This can add a degree of difficulty that only few can ever pull off with little trouble. All it requires is patience and timing, few more elements that can further sway others looking to farm a few kills..
-Another thing we can do is implement an overheat system, so that say... 3 shots fired in quick succession can overheat the rifle for a short time. We can add another skill, GÇ£Sniper rifle efficiencyGÇ¥ 8x to increase the amount of shots you can fire without overheating the rifle.
These are small ideas, and as much as IGÇÖd like them to be implemented, another person may disagree. They are entitled to their own opinion so long as it is constructive, not stuff like:
Quote:GÇ£ Snipers are a coward classGÇ¥ GÇ£Snipers are no-skill scrubs farming killsGÇ¥ yadda yadda dot dotta. as much as i enjoy those salty tears, I donGÇÖt want that in this thread, please. Let us think this through like responsible adults ok? Thank you.
Until next time :D
Good luck and safe hunting

Video games, scopes, sway and the idiocy that game designers think this kind of crap solves just amazes me.
First, I like the breathing mechanic. However, I Hate anything in this game that sucks SP with so little reward. Like half the SP in the game, oddly enough.
A simple mechanism that is never used often enough is single shot sniper rifles.
Another that is used in many games effectively, so of course we don't have, it is varying the Zoom level. Technically I understand why, but from a game play standpoint it is just plain wrong. Someone with a 55" HDTV has everybody beat. Simple as that.
Now you want to skill up the Sniper? - reduce the amount of time to reload (one round) by .25 seconds per step. - reduce the sway stabilization by .25 seconds per step tied to the breathing mechanic. - increase weapon distance by 25 meters. - increase weapon damage by 2% - increase Zoom by +3% Either add to the breathing skill or add to the stabilization or allow both. When those are at acceptable levels add this: - add a round at a time to the weapon. - reduce the length of time to change a clip by .25 seconds per step. Twist as much as you want to torment the Sniper Population.
Now tie them into a sticking Gordian knot. Each mechanic can only be done in order, at all must end at the same level. You cannot add clips until single shot is maxed. The last mechanic in your list allow the first to be increased next. So MA = 1, MB = 1, MC = 0, MD = 0, ME = 0; means MC Must be increased next. When ME = 1 then MA can be increased to 2 and so on.
Nobody will be lvl 5 Sniper Rifle and lvl 5 Lt Weapon Sharpshooter with nothing else being done. And the higher levels cost a bloody fortune.
Part of the problem here is the SP is so bloody expensive and people will, naturally, try to max out the one thing they are most interested in or will give the best (perceived) bang for the buck. Others, not understanding where someone else has put SP, QQs about Snipers are easy, from Hell itself, OP and ruining everything. They do this without realizing the Farsight cost 1.5 cents and has a 1000M range. Which Light Weapon Sharpshooter will increase to 1250 meters.
Anyway, that is my mostly adult response. Just a little QQ and bitching thrown in for flavor. |
