I noticed tracers don't always show up when sniping. Especially if you are a great distance away from the projectiles origin.Lots of times I will be grouped witha fellow sniper and notice clear tracers from his/her shots. But when being targeted very rarely will an enemies tracers show up. Is this because of certain sniper rifles design? Is it a bug? Is there a designated falloff for tracers (like rifle tracers)?
I'm curious if it is supposed to be this way. Normally to counter snipe you need to use your wits and investigate the trajectory and direction of an enemy snipers missed shots to return fire. Tracers give you a bit of information for every shot they miss. Do no tracer means no Intel.
Low scan profile and no tracers could make a sniper invulnerable to counter sniping
Update post: Before I thought it was a bugged feature on all rifles, but I now believe the tracer is attributed to only a certain one or two sniper rifles.
While playing today I didn't see any sign of the tracer which resembles a light chalking of smoke penetrating through the air. Didn't see it until my 5th match that is. I was dashing between a few choice perches, posturing stationary for only seconds to pick off my victims. Any decent sniper is constantly a mobile threat. Then a high pitched ping echoed around me. A fatal mistake to any merc dumb enough to scope me.
I reacted near instant, swinging my reticle through the nearby hills spot checking for heads or HUD indicators. So then the shameless fool took another lame shot, probably praying it would score him a cheap frag. And there it was, terrible aim was apparent, his shot traced right back to his little scrub hill.
I crouched, scoped in. He missed another desperate shot, the white tracer defined his location further. My scope swayed and then subsided on his face. He let out another awful attempt... that landed by tracer at my feet. And then I took his head.
This proves first of all, obviously, that there are indeed tracers for sniper shots. Secondly, we can infer now that only certain rifles will trace a snipers shot. Why this is an isolated feature I do not know. It is clearly an imbalance which granted my original assumption it was a random bug.
Point being, and it still stands that with no tracer and no other indicator it is virtually impossible to counter a secluded sniper. All snipers should possess this tracer for every shot they make.
That's the reason I made this thread, thank you. |

There is an indicator for a short distance in front of the firing sniper but there's a much more useful flash that you can see when they fire if you are looking in the general direction - communicate with your teammates and maybe they will tell you of enemy sniper locations(that or learn where the most likely spots are). You know the general area they are firing from if you get hit - shift position and scan the hills.

Give its a little time you'll see I love watching a point get capped right within meters of a sniper that is up on a rock not paying attention... then he dies. It's non-cooperative-karma in the form of bullets.
Granted some will delude themselves into believing they are sniper material, so you will always get to enjoy seeing them fail over and over :) |

I didn't see one tracer nor did I see any flashes when standing directly behind firing enemy snipers before turning their heads into a fine mist. The flash was definitely there a few builds ago but seems to be gone now.
